Job Summary
We are seeking compassionate and dedicated Independent Contract Instructor Therapists to work with the A. Khazendar Behavioural Development & Respite Center (AK Center). In this role, you will deliver specialized therapeutic, developmental, and emotional support services to children with diverse needs. As an independent professional, you will implement individualized treatment plans, collaborate closely with families, and ensure a safe, nurturing, and patient-centered environment to promote positive outcomes through evidence-based practices.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Tailored Interventions: Deliver therapeutic interventions customized to each child's unique behavioral, developmental, or emotional needs.
- Individualized Programming: Work independently one-on-one or in small group settings to execute client-specific, individualized programming.
- Daily Support & Independence: Assist children with daily activities to foster independence, self-help, and social skills in a supportive environment.
- Medication Administration: Safely and accurately administer medications as prescribed, strictly following all safety protocols and documentation procedures.
- Collaboration: Partner and collaborate with families, caregivers, and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to develop and update individualized treatment plans.
- Professional Documentation: Maintain detailed, confidential documentation of sessions, progress notes, and relevant clinical/medical information in strict compliance with privacy regulations.
- Safety & Prep: Prepare, set up, and clean the workspace before and after sessions, ensuring a safe environment by adhering to all safety guidelines and protocols.
- Meetings & Development: Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and ongoing training to align with best practices in pediatric therapy.
- Travel: Travel independently to home-based or community-based sessions as required.

Skills
- Experience working with children in therapeutic or educational settings is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of special education strategies and accommodations for diverse learning needs.
- Ability to administer medications safely and accurately as part of patient care routines.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology relevant to pediatric therapy and patient care.
- Excellent data collection skills to monitor progress and inform treatment adjustments.
- Compassionate communication skills to engage children effectively while collaborating with families and team members.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in all aspects of patient care.
Essential Requirements
To secure independent contracts to work with AK, you will generally need to provide:
- Background Check: A current Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).
- Certifications: Standard First Aid and CPR, and sometimes crisis intervention training (e.g., Crisis Prevention Intervention - CPI).
- Transportation: A valid G-class driver's license, a clean driver's abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle, as you will often be driving clients to community activities.
- Education & Credentials: Diplomas or equivalent practical experience in Developmental Services Work (DSW), Child and Youth Care (CYC/CYW), or Early Childhood Education (ECE) are a major asset.
- Comfort and confidence working with children of all developmental ages and abilities.
- Strong knowledge of special education strategies, accommodations for diverse learning needs, and pediatric medical terminology.
- Proven ability to safely and accurately manage medication routines as part of a child's care plan.
- Highly developed compassionate communication skills to engage children while collaborating professionally with families and team members.
- Strict adherence to confidentiality, privacy regulations, and professional ethical standards.
- Foundational knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), and special needs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current or completed post-secondary degree in: Autism & Behavioural Science, Behaviour Science Technology, Psychology, or Education.
Required Experience:
- Several years of experience working with children in some capacity, OR
- 3 years of experience working with children with autism and other developmental disabilities, OR
- 1 year of direct experience working in the behavioral intervention field.
- In-depth practical knowledge of ASD and ABA principles.
The A. Khazendar Behavioural Development & Respite Center is currently accepting applications for students seeking academic field placements to satisfy the practical requirements of the Autism and Behavioural Science graduate certificate program, as well as other related college and university programs.
Students will have the opportunity to observe and participate in our structured, evidence-based developmental programs. The AK leadership team will work closely with students to ensure you gain the practical skills, hands-on knowledge, and experience needed to build a solid foundation for your future career in behavioral services.
