Assistant Engineering Manager – Architectural Millwork / Woodworking

Our client is seeking an experienced Assistant Engineering Manager to help lead an engineering and detailing team responsible for complex, custom architectural millwork projects.
This position combines hands-on millwork engineering expertise with team leadership. You will manage workloads, review shop and production drawings, mentor engineers and detailers, troubleshoot production issues, and improve the systems used to deliver accurate, buildable drawing packages.
This is not a general engineering or construction-management role. Candidates must have direct experience with architectural millwork, custom cabinetry, store fixtures, or commercial woodworking.
Responsibilities
- Assign engineering work and manage departmental workloads and priorities.
- Lead daily team meetings to review schedules, deliverables, and technical challenges.
- Review shop and production drawings for accuracy, constructability, completeness, and production readiness.
- Guide team members in developing AutoCAD and Microvellum drawing packages.
- Review material takeoffs, cut lists, custom part details, layouts, and 3D models.
- Ensure applicable projects and submittals comply with AWMAC and AWI standards.
- Coordinate submittal packages and help resolve non-compliance issues.
- Monitor engineering RFIs and ensure they are addressed and closed.
- Troubleshoot technical issues between engineering, project management, and production.
- Coordinate with project managers, production leaders, and other departments to resolve project conflicts.
- Monitor drawing quality, budgeted engineering hours, workflow, and internal errors.
- Develop and track department KPIs.
- Help structure engineering processes to support company growth.
- Train, mentor, and provide constructive feedback to engineering team members.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, performance reviews, and professional development.
- Adjust schedules and resources to meet changing project and production requirements.
Required Qualifications
- At least (5)five years of experience in architectural millwork, commercial woodworking, custom cabinetry, or store-fixture manufacturing.
- At least (5)five years of AutoCAD design or drafting experience within a millwork environment.
- Previous leadership, supervisory, or engineering-team management experience.
- Strong understanding of cabinetry construction, millwork materials, hardware, joinery, and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to review detailed shop drawings and identify constructability or production issues.
- Experience coordinating engineering requirements with production and project-management teams.
- Strong problem-solving, organization, communication, and time-management skills.
- Ability to coach, train, and motivate technical team members.
- Working knowledge of AWMAC and/or AWI standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Microvellum experience.
- Experience developing or monitoring engineering KPIs.
- Experience preparing AWMAC or AWI submittal packages.
- Experience leading engineering or detailing teams on high-end commercial, institutional, hospitality, entertainment, or retail millwork projects.
