This course takes a critical approach to Social Studies (including History and Geography) education which emphasizes citizenship, social action and interactive, hands-on, constructivist learning using principles of universal design for learning. Skills, attitudes, and understandings for teaching and assessing in 4 increasingly diverse classrooms, are modelled and examined. A commitment to Reconciliation and decolonizing pedagogies underpins this work. Attention to contemporary topics (such as conflict resolution and peace building; environmental stewardship and the climate crisis; social cohesion and democracy) are examples of topics addressed. The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach Curriculum and Pedagogy in Elementary Social Studies. The instructor will support teacher candidates in understanding and applying pedagogical strategies for teaching History, Geography, and interdisciplinary Social Studies content at the Primary/Junior and Junior/Intermediate levels. The course is grounded in equity, reconciliation, and anti-colonial educational practices, and prepares future teachers to guide students in becoming informed, compassionate, and engaged citizens.
- Design and deliver course content focused on critical Social Studies pedagogy, curriculum design, and assessment practices for Grades 1–8.
- Introduce teacher candidates to decolonizing and reconciliation-oriented approaches to teaching History and Geography.
- Explore contemporary social issues (e.g., environmental crises, global conflict, democracy) through a lens of social justice and civic engagement.
- Engage teacher candidates in reflective practice to consider their roles as educators in fostering inclusive, ethical, and culturally responsive classrooms.
- Collaborate with course team or administration to ensure alignment with B.Ed. program goals and standards.
