Summer ROCKS - Children
Start Date: June 29, 2026
End Date: August 21, 2026
Job Type: Full-time, 35 hrs/week (8 weeks)
Wage: $20/hr

An eight-week, no-cost, in-person, registration-based program offered to Children (ages
6–12):
Activities ranging in arts, sports, academics (math, science, literacy), gardening, nature
exploration, intercultural and intergenerational experiences.
Role Description
Under the supervision and guidance of the Child & Youth Programming Coordinator, the
Child Development Lead will take a leadership role in developing and co-leading an 8-
week no-cost summer program directed towards low-income and newcomer families in
the Riverbend and surrounding area. Responsibilities and tasks will include:
● Designing, planning, organizing, and executing a diverse range of projects and
activities encompassing learning, sports, recreation, environmental awareness,
music, and art tailored for children aged 5 to 12 years old.
● Assist with community events alongside the Community Engagement Coordinator
including but not limited to community suppers, field trips, gardening, community
markets, bazaars, and more.
Children
● Demonstrate positive conduct, constructive problem-solving, and teamwork to
both Program Assistants and participants as a role model. Additionally, cultivate an
inclusive and positive environment that fosters full participation and growth.
● Provide daily supervision, mentorship, and guidance to Program Assistants,
empowering them to effectively fulfill their job responsibilities and apply
constructive feedback.
● Support program assistants in establishing daily and weekly goals, actively
monitor their progress, offer constructive feedback on their performance, and aid
them in identifying and implementing strategies for enhanced performance
whenever needed.
● Conduct research to discover and obtain engaging educational games for
Program Assistants to facilitate young children's development of literacy and
numeracy skills.

An eight-week, no-cost, in-person, drop-in program offered to Youth (ages 13–18):
Activities ranging in academic, recreational, and social activities in a safe, supportive space. It includes mentorship, post-secondary exploration, job readiness (resumes, interviews), and financial literacy workshops. Activities will also include gardening, nature exploration, and intercultural and intergenerational experiences.
Role Description
Under the supervision and guidance of the Riverbend ROCKS Coordinator-Children and Youth Programming, Youth Development Lead will take a leadership role in developing and co-leading an 8-week no-cost summer program for children aged 13 to 18 years old. Responsibilities and tasks will include:
- Curate a diverse range of educational and recreational activities tailored to culturally diverse youth aged 13 to 18.
- Plan, execute and report on activities: sports, educational, environmental, recreational, visual, and performing arts (e.g. Free Play for Kids, Terwillegar Rec Centre, Edmonton Public Library).
- Organize events connecting youth with relevant organizations to ease transitions to post-secondary education (e.g., Norquest, Metro Education, University of Alberta tours).
- Assist the leads in mentoring youth on employment prospects, community involvement, volunteering, and addressing family and social challenges.
- Support newcomers, marginalized, and vulnerable youth in navigating the Canadian education system, focusing on transitional points (e.g., moving from junior high to high school).
- Foster self-confidence, community belonging, and resilience by addressing expressed challenges and incorporating them into program activities.
- Leverage community resources and learning opportunities.
