Design Engineering Co-op (Fall 2026)
What is OmaScan?
OmaScan is a healthtech startup helping seniors and people with accessibility challenges live longer, safer, more independent lives at home.
Getting a home assessed for modifications is slow and manual. Occupational therapists spend hours measuring, documenting, and chasing paperwork after every visit, while clients wait months on waitlists. We're building an AI assistant that comes with the assessor, measures the home itself using the phone's LiDAR, checks it against accessibility codes, and handles the paperwork after. This allows the assessor to spend more time with the client, and less on admin work.
We've raised angel funding, run pilots across four provinces, and have a 200+ clinician waitlist.
The Role
This is a 4 to 8 month co-op starting September 2026. You'll work on the mobile app that guides an occupational therapist through a home assessment: voice, photos, video, LiDAR scans, and AR measurements, captured in one pass. Our users are clinicians, and many of them are not comfortable with technology. The user experience needs to be dead simple, and provide clear value to non-technical users quickly.
Depending on your strengths, you could be:
- Building capture and review screens in React Native
- Working on the native ARKit measurement and scanning experience
- Running usability sessions with real OTs in live pilots and fixing what confuses them
- Polishing the design system: components, states, animation, accessibility
- Onboarding users and participating in feedback sessions
You'll sit in on customer calls, see how an early company actually gets built, and have a real say in what we make. There may also be the chance to travel to pilot sites and conferences.
Who this is for
- You build things on your own, outside of class. A shipped app, a polished side project, or hackathon work is a huge bonus.
- You have a solid understanding of how to design high quality user experiences
- You are interested or have experience in Healthtech or other regulated industries
- You are a quick learner and enjoy wearing multiple hats.
- You want to work hard, learn a huge amount quickly, and have real ownership over product decisions
- You care about building something that genuinely helps people.
You do not need years of experience or a perfect resume. We care about what you can build and how fast you learn.
Technical expectations
Our stack: TypeScript, React Native, Swift/ARKit, NestJS, Google Cloud
You should be comfortable with:
- Writing and shipping production apps
- Front end design principles, and a strong UX intuition
- Agentic workflows and development
- Picking up new tools and frameworks on your own
Bonus:
- An app you've shipped to the App Store or Play Store
- Design experience: your own design system, portfolio, or interaction work
- ARKit/ARCore, 3D data, or computer vision
- Designing for accessibility or older adults
We've raised funding and have real pilots across Canada, but we're early and there's a lot to build. This is a co-op where you'll do real work that matters, learn faster than you would almost anywhere else, and work directly with the founders and engineering team. For the right person, this can turn into a full time role.
