The Indigenous Engagement Team in the Office of the Provost & Vice-President Academic invites applications for a Research and Education Advisor. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Child health and wellness is an institution-wide priority at the University of Calgary. Research that is undertaken by the One Child Every Child (OCEC) team strives to inform current and future policymakers and partners to guide future decisions that affect children and youth, their families and communities. One of the priorities of OCEC is to listen to and support the success of all First Nations, Metis, and Inuit scholars and students by providing Indigenous education offerings for all One Child Every Child researchers, staff, students, and community-partners.
The Indigenous Accelerator Research and Education Advisor reports to the Indigenous Accelerator Project Manager and supports the implementation of the strategic goals of the Indigenous Ways of Knowing (IWoK) Accelerator.
The Advisor is responsible for managing and guiding the financial and operational activities of Indigenous education initiatives, acting as a subject matter expert on change management and project finance management (including government funding through Canadian First Research Excellence Fund). This position is instrumental in designing and developing experiential learning opportunities for Indigenous students through the IWoK Accelerator.
The Research and Education Advisor also works with the Indigenous Accelerator Project Manager to organize and communicate professional learning sessions and opportunities. They will also be responsible for onboarding and supporting incoming summer students and OCEC award recipients. This role includes administrative duties, associated with project/events coordination and operations management.

Develop and implement change management recommendations, as a subject matter expert, while exercising professional discretion and judgment in navigating university policies and processes.

Contributes to strategic planning and provides support to strategic initiatives by incorporating new ideas and suggestions, evaluating possibilities, and/or support piloting of new approaches, processes and procedures, in alignment with strategic goals of OCEC.

Manage operational planning and organizational efficiency.
-
Acts as resource to others including: supervising, training and mentoring summer and graduate students.

Preparing overviews of community research and developing community reports.
-
Participates in committees, regular and ad hoc, at the request of the Academic Department Head, and may represent as project lead.

Responsible for overseeing and maintaining the overall administrative operations, which also includes:

Booking 1:1's and team meetings.

Creates and distributes agendas and records minutes at meetings.
-
Facilitating general incoming and outgoing inquiries.
-
This position may take on other duties and projects specific to OCEC as required.
Qualifications / Requirements:
-
Minimum Undergraduate degree in business, education, Indigenous studies, or a related area. A combination of education and equivalent experience is required; Master's degree or other professional degree is preferred.

Ten years of progressively responsible operations and management experience.

A minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, budgeting, and the preparation of summary and community-centered reports.

A minimum of 3 years of project management and event planning experience.

A minimum of 3 years of experience working within a team, preferably in a unionized environment.

Demonstrated budget management skills with multiple large complex budgets.

Ability to develop, recommend, and implement new work processes, procedures, and strategic and operational plans.

Ability to create an effective business case for change management is preferred
-
Knowledge of Indigenous research ethics, protocols, and methodologies. This includes key application of TCPS2 and Chapter 9: Research with First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Peoples.

Facilitation support for the delivery of educational offerings and initiatives to OCEC team

Inter-cultural competency working with and for First Nation, Metis and Inuit peoples, communities, and organizations. Must demonstrate professionalism, discretion, courtesy, and respect in all interactions with internal and external clients creating a positive image for the Institute.

Evidence of highly developed organizational and decision-making skills.

Strong communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and concisely, excellent editing skills.

Demonstrated expertise in setting agendas, recording decisions, and meeting minutes.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with strong communication and conflict management skills.

Be resourceful, innovative, creative, and strategic in problem-solving with high attention to detail.

Experience in making travel arrangements is an asset.
-
Ability to work independently, be self-directed and anticipate needs; plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work with minimal direction and supervision.

Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook Mail and Calendar) and the university core business systems (e.g., PeopleSoft).

Understanding of the policies and protocols of the University of Calgary, ii'taa'poh'to'p the Indigenous Strategy, and of OCEC's mission, values, and plans.
