Camp Acorn is Niagara’s only trauma-informed day camp designed to help children build trust, make connections, and develop coping strategies to better manage their emotions and behaviours. Using this unique approach, we work to provide experiences dedicated to helping campers process emotions and build resilience through a variety of traditional camp activities including cooperative games, sports, arts & crafts, music, and drama.
Camp Counsellors will report to the Day Camp Site Supervisor. Camp Acorn runs in the following communities: St. Catharines, Welland, Niagara Falls & Grimsby - successful candidates must be able to work in Welland and Port Colborne.
Responsibilities:
· Supervise and care for campers throughout the day.
· Plan and lead recreational activities such as arts & crafts, sports, and cooperative games.
· facilitate team-building activities and initiatives.
· Organize activities for before and after care programs.
· Manage risk and ensure the safety and well-being of campers at all times.
· Communicate effectively with campers, staff, and parents.
· Implement trauma-informed practices in daily activities and interactions with campers.
· Maintain a clean and organized camp environment.
· Develop and maintain professional and positive relationships with families and caregivers.
· Appropriately respond and attend to camper’s behaviours.
Required Skills / Knowledge / Experience
· Experience in working with children in a recreational or camp setting (required).
· Must be organized and detail oriented, comfortable in working with diverse individuals.
· Create a warm and welcoming environment where children feel comfortable.
· Actively engage and supervise children ensuring they are always within visual and auditory range.
· Must possess excellent communication skills.
· Must be creative, future-oriented; focused on identifying opportunities and new approaches.
· Ability to act independently; takes positive action on own initiative.
· Positive, enthusiastic, and motivated with a high energy level.
Working Conditions
· $18.60 per hour.
· Contract position (ends September 4)
· 37.5 hours per week.
· 9:45AM - 5:45PM, Monday-Friday.
· Assigned to our Welland/Port Colborne locations
Other Requirements
· Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC).
· Valid Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation.
· First Aid CPR-C certification (or willingness to obtain).
· Post-Secondary education in Recreation, Child Studies, or equivalent (preferred).
