We're seeking a compassionate and reliable caregiver to support an independent 96-year-old gentleman living in his own apartment near Lake Ontario in east Toronto. Despite his age, he remains remarkably active and sharp—walking to the grocery store, managing his own cooking and laundry, and maintaining his home. His primary challenge is severe hearing loss (16% hearing in one ear, even with a hearing aid), which requires a caregiver who can communicate very clearly and patiently.
About the Client: This gentleman values his independence deeply. He prepares healthy meals from scratch, keeps his apartment tidy, and takes pride in staying physically and mentally active. He enjoys walking outdoors, sitting in the building's garden quad, and maintaining his daily routines. While he's in excellent health for his age, he can become anxious when small issues arise (like his hearing aid not charging properly). He's also quite particular about his routines—he makes his own tea, manages his own meals, and prefers to handle most tasks himself. Sundays are reserved for his personal care routine.
Responsibilities:
- Provide companionship during 2-hour visits, engaging in conversation and social activities
- Accompany him on walks to nearby amenities (grocery store, pharmacy, park by the lake)
- Assist with light tidying as needed, respecting his preference to maintain independence
- Provide occasional transportation for errands or appointments
- Monitor his wellbeing and communicate any concerns to family
- Help troubleshoot minor issues (like hearing aid charging) that may cause distress
- Build trust gradually, understanding he may be initially wary of accepting help
What We're Looking For:
- Excellent English communication skills with clear enunciation (essential due to hearing impairment)
- Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle for occasional outings
- Patient, calm demeanor with seniors who value independence
- Experience working with hard-of-hearing clients
- Ability to speak slowly and clearly, keeping conversations simple and direct
- Respectful of client's routines and preferences
- Reliable, consistent, and communicative with family
- Comfortable with a gradual relationship-building process
Schedule: Flexible schedule, 6 hours per week minimum spread across 2-3 visits. Preferred start time is 10:00 AM or later. All days except Sunday are available. Initial visits may be shorter as the client adjusts to receiving care.
