The Bookkeeper Role
Key Responsibilities
- Perform full-cycle bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients
- Reconcile bank, credit card, tax accounts and other balance sheet accounts
- Prepare and file HST/GST returns and payroll remittances
- Process payroll and maintain payroll records
- Assist new clients with setup of chart of accounts and train on processes for recording their own bookkeeping, and remain available for follow-up questions and quarterly check-ins
- Prepare catch-up and sometimes correct messy bookkeeping as needed for preparation of year-end files
- Prepare working papers for year-end engagements
- Support partners and professional accounting staff with year-end files and other tax reporting requirements
- Communicate directly with clients regarding bookkeeping
- Communicate with partners and managers on status of jobs, deadlines and client issues
- Maintain accurate and organized digital records
Knowledge and Skills
- Minimum 5+ years of bookkeeping experience, preferably in a public accounting firm
- Strong understanding of Canadian accounting and payroll practices
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online/Desktop and Microsoft Office Suite
- Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Must have strong written and verbal communication and client service skills
- Must have a resourceful mindset with the ability to find answers and resolve problems independently
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently
- Experience with CaseWare and CCH products would be an asset
- Experience with other cloud-based accounting applications such as Sage and Xero would also be an asset
