This position safely and effectively performs a variety of semi-skilled duties including new construction, repair and maintenance in the sewer and drainage operations. This position typically reports to a Crew Lead.
- Perform general yard maintenance at work sites as directed.
- Remove and replace material when rebuilding manholes and catch basins (SDO).
- Remove debris and covers to provide access to survey and inspect wastewater and drainage systems (SDO).
- Excavate trenches by hand and/or with equipment.
- Backfill and tamp trenches.
- Assist with the laying and jointing of water and sewer lines.
- Assist with the repairs of water and sewer lines.
- Load, unload and set up equipment.
- Assist in a variety of other duties and equipment in the water and sewer operations (e.g. Hydrovac, valve turner, steamer, water main flusher)
- Maintain good working relationship with fellow workers and supervisors.
- Follow all rules and regulations as set out in the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual and Water Distribution Unit policies and procedures.
- Perform related work as required.
- Grade Twelve (12) or General Education Development (GED) equivalency.
- One (1) year general labourer experience performing construction, repair and/or maintenance activities within the water and sewer environment or related field.
- Must obtain and maintain level one (1) Operator Certification, as identified under the Saskatchewan Water and Wastewater Works Operator Certification Standards in the category relevant to their operating area within one (1) year.
- Knowledge of all the techniques used by the sewer and water operations in the maintenance, repair and installation of underground assets.
- Skill in the use and care of common tools required to perform the duties of this position.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out verbal and written instructions and provide verbal or written reports on work performed.
- Demonstrated skills to establish and maintain effective working relations and a respectful work environment with superiors, subordinates, co-workers, and the general public.
- Ability to interpret, understand and manage work in accordance with the general rules and regulations of the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act, other legislation, and expectations of the City of Regina’s policies, standards, practices, and guidelines.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal or written instruction of a semi-technical nature.
- Demonstrated ability to deal listen, understand, and respond to public and internal inquiries/concerns and respond in a respectful and appropriate manner.
- Ability to perform heavy physical labour over sustained periods in all types of weather conditions.
- Ability to perform confined space entry work in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- Ability to acquire a sound, general understanding of the sewer and water systems.
- Must posses a valid Class 5 driver’s license. 1A license is an asset.
- Must have or obtain training/certification in confined space entry, safe trenching, WHMIS, First aid and CPR.
- Must be able and willing to perform work of a physical nature in field environments and inclement conditions.
- Must be willing to be on call, perform overtime, and work shift and/or irregular hours.
- Must be comfortable working in environments where sewage is present.
- Must respond to call outs and emergencies as required.
