Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced, dedicated, energetic, and detail-oriented Optometric Assistant/Receptionist to join our eye care team. The ideal candidate is motivated, takes initiative, and is passionate about delivering exceptional patient care while supporting the optometry team with optical, clinical, and administrative tasks to ensure the smooth daily operation of our practice.
Duties
- Greet and assist patients during their visits, ensuring a welcoming experience
- Prepare patients for eye examinations by updating electronic medical records (EMR)
- Conduct preliminary vision and diagnostic testing
- Manage front desk responsibilities including scheduling appointments, verifying insurance information, and handling patient check-in/check-out processes
- Optometric OHIP billing
- Coordinate care with other health care practitioners
- Educate patients on optical products, lens options, and frame selections to support retail sales efforts
- Frame styling
- Order eyeglasses according to patient's prescription, style, and visual needs
- Adjust and repair eyeglasses
- Train patients how to use contact lenses
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of exam rooms and optical displays
- Assist in inventory management of optical supplies and equipment
- Support the clinical team with administrative and optical tasks as needed to ensure efficient workflow
Requirements
- Two years experience in optometry customer service, optical sales or medical office administration is required. This includes proficiency in scheduling appointments, billing OHIP and private insurance, diagnostic testing and dispensing eyewear
- Prior experience with medical or optometric billing is required
- Knowledge of electronic medical records systems is highly desirable
- Experience in patient care or customer service roles within healthcare or retail settings is advantageous
- Familiarity with medical terminology related to eye care
- Optical experience or background in eyewear retail sales is required
- Strong communication skills and a compassionate approach to patient interaction are essential
- Willingness to learn new skills including sales and technician duties.
- Demonstrated proficiency in spoken and written English sufficient to communicate clearly with patients, accurately complete medical documentation, and perform the essential duties of the position.
- Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in providing excellent patient service.
This is a permanent full-time role. Hourly wage will be dependent on the successful candidate's skills and experience.
