Reporting to the Director, Quality Management, the Manager, Patient Safety provides strategic direction, leadership, and oversight for patient safety across Recovery Alberta. The Manager is accountable for the performance, development, and outcomes of the Patient Safety team and its areas of responsibility. Drawing on extensive expertise in evidence-informed practice, legislation, governance, and operational leadership, the Manager advances patient safety priorities while supporting the development and implementation of strategies, frameworks, and processes that align with Recovery Alberta's operational needs and broader Provincial Health Authority accountabilities. This is a complex leadership role with provincial scope, requiring the coordination of centrally administered supports that are delivered locally across diverse service and program environments.
Key responsibilities include leading a team of patient safety professionals, coaching, staff development, and overall team leadership within the larger Quality Management team in Recovery Alberta. The Manager provides subject matter expertise in patient safety, quality improvement, risk management, and implementation, while fostering effective partnerships across Recovery Alberta and the broader health system. The incumbent plays a critical role in advancing integrated service delivery that aligns with Recovery Alberta's programmatic structure and provincial priorities. The Manager builds and sustains strategic relationships to strengthen patient safety practices and drive continuous improvement. This includes leadership and oversight of activities such as quality assurance reviews, patient safety reviews of adverse events, development and implementation of recommendations, patient safety surveillance, reporting, and organizational learning initiatives. Through this work, the Manager contributes to sustainable system improvements that enhance quality, safety, and outcomes for patients and families.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Health, Business, Policy or Social Sciences. An equivalent combination of other education and experience will be considered. Active registration for those eligible under the Health Professions Act. Extensive Addiction, Mental Health and/or Correctional Health expertise through experience in a variety of settings/roles. A minimum of five years’ experience in leadership/management in a complex health care setting or an organization of significant size. Experience with human resource management including recruitment, selection, training, supervision, coaching and performance management. A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development in quality management and patient safety.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Specialized depth and breadth of expertise in patient safety. Extensive knowledge of clinical areas, groups and professions and the processes that support changing clinical practice. Facilitation and/or coordination experience in project planning, execution, reporting, monitoring and evaluation. Experience managing physical and financial resources, including the ability to develop and interpret budgets. Significant experience in problem solving, concerns resolution, investigation, conflict resolution and negotiation. Demonstrated ability to foster relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. Effective communicator with strong organizational skills, influencing skills, interpersonal skills, client-focused orientation and commitment to providing quality services. Ability to develop, facilitate and deliver presentations to convey information or transfer knowledge. Strong writing skills, with the ability to author and or oversee formal documents and reports. Demonstrated ability to facilitate transformational change.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of the Addiction, Mental Health and/or Correctional Health system and its complexities. Working knowledge of Recovery Alberta systems, policies and processes. Certification/education in health systems leadership; process improvement; change management; project management.
