SUMMARY
The Asphalt Breakdown Roller Operator plays a critical role in the road construction process by performing the initial compaction of freshly laid hot-mix asphalt. Working directly behind the asphalt paver, this position is responsible for achieving the primary target density and establishing the foundation for a smooth, high-quality, and durable road surface.
PRIMARY SCOPE OF ROLE
PAVING OPERATIONS & QUALITY CONTROL
- Operate steel-drum vibratory breakdown rollers directly behind the paver to compact hot-mix asphalt while it is at its optimal temperature.
- Working with on site quality technicians to establish the initial rolling pattern to meet strict project density specifications and prevent asphalt shifting or tearing.
- Maintain tight coordination with the Paver Operator to match the paving speed and maintain continuous production.
- Work as a team member of the paving crew performing other tasks as required to ensure efficient daily start-up and shut down activities
EQUIPMENT OPERATION & TECHNICAL SKILL
- Safely manipulate speed, direction, and vibration frequencies (amplitude/vibratory settings) based on asphalt mix type, lift thickness, and ground temperature.
- Ensure drum water spray systems operate perfectly to prevent asphalt from sticking to the steel drums. Clean the machine at the end of each shift.
SAFETY & INSPECTION COMPLIANCE
- Pre-Shift Inspection: Fluid levels, tire/drum conditions, water spray bars, and safety systems must be checked daily before operation.
- Strictly follow all occupational health and safety regulations, including wearing required PPE and practicing high vigilance in high-traffic work zones.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 2–3 years of experience operating breakdown rollers on heavy civil, commercial, or municipal paving projects.
- Deep understanding of asphalt compaction concepts, rolling patterns, and the impact of mat temperatures on density.
- Ability to work long hours outdoors in extreme weather conditions (heat, dust, noise) and tolerate continuous machine vibration.
- Willingness to work variable shifts, including overtime, nights, and weekends, to accommodate road closure windows.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
