Role Summary
This is a full-time, on-site role located in Puslinch, ON. As an Intermediate Controls Systems Designer/Programmer, you will contribute to the design, programming, and integration of control systems for custom industrial automation equipment.
You will work hands-on with PLCs, robotics, vision, motion, and safety systems, while collaborating with senior team members to deliver projects from concept through commissioning.
This role is well suited for candidates looking to take the next step toward full system ownership.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design, development, implementation, documentation, and troubleshooting of controls systems for complex custom automation projects
- Develop and modify PLC-based controls systems, including HMIs, servo drives, robotics, safety systems, and vision systems
- Participate in the development and implementation of SCADA systems using Ignition
- Support and contribute to the design and integration of industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, serial communications, etc.)
- Develop and integrate robotic applications (Fanuc, ABB, Denso, Motoman, etc.)
- Integrate and commission AC/DC drives, VFDs, and servo motion systems
- Integrate machine vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, Banner, Omron)
- Support machine start-ups, commissioning, debugging, safety validation, and robot teaching
- Troubleshoot electrical, controls, and system-level issues, with collaboration from senior team members when required
- Support preliminary PHSRs and collaborate with Safety Engineers
- Develop and maintain system documentation including drawing updates, control narratives, operation manuals, and electronic backups
- Provide technical support during integration and service activities
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree or diploma in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Automation & Robotics, or a related discipline
- 3-5 years of experience in controls system design and factory automation integration (or equivalent practical experience)
- Experience with:
- PLC programming (from scratch)
- Motion control and servo systems
- Robotics, machine vision, and safety systems
- Exposure to Ignition SCADA systems
- (Ignition certification considered a strong asset)
- Understanding of electrical design principles, including power calculations, wiring methods, fuse sizing, and component selection
- Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (CSA, NFPA, CE, SEMI, EN, etc.)
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interface confidently with customers, vendors, and internal teams
- Organized, pragmatic problem-solver comfortable working in fast-paced project environments
- Willingness to travel internationally as required (including the USA and Mexico)
- Flexibility to support projects during critical commissioning periods

The expected rate for this position is $38.00/HR - $52.00/HR. The total compensation may vary depending on the candidate’s skills, experience, qualifications, and other relevant factors.
