Senior Architectural Technologist / Residential Building DesignerAbout Nauta Home Designs
Nauta Home Designs has been providing Niagara and surrounding areas with high-quality residential and small building design services since 1990. We specialize in custom homes, additions, renovations, and small commercial buildings, providing complete design, planning, permit, and project support services.
We are a family-owned business that values long-term relationships, technical excellence, and a collaborative team environment. As our company continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced Architectural Technologist or Building Designer who can immediately contribute to residential and small building projects with minimal training.
Important Note for Applicants
This is an intermediate-to-senior level position.
We are specifically seeking an individual with several years of hands-on experience designing and preparing permit drawings for houses, additions, renovations, and other Part 9 buildings under the Ontario Building Code.
This is not an entry-level position and is not intended for recent graduates or candidates requiring foundational training in residential design, permit preparation, or Ontario Building Code application. While training will be provided on our internal standards and processes, applicants must already possess a strong working knowledge of residential building design and Ontario Building Code requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Architectural Technology, Building Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience designing and preparing permit drawings for residential and small building projects in Ontario.
- Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying the Ontario Building Code, particularly Part 9 requirements.
- Experience independently preparing permit-ready construction drawings for custom homes, additions, renovations, and/or small buildings.
- Strong understanding of residential construction methods and building assemblies.
- Ability to identify code compliance issues and develop practical design solutions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally and accurately with clients, municipalities, consultants, and team members.
- Exceptional written and verbal English communication skills are required due to the technical nature of client communications, permit applications, building code interpretation, and construction documentation.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Valid Ontario G Class Driver's Licence.
- Ability to work in person at our Welland office.
Preferred Qualifications
- BCIN qualification in House, Small Buildings, or related categories.
- Experience using SoftPlan.
- Experience with small commercial or Part 3 projects.
- Experience coordinating permit submissions with municipalities.
- Experience mentoring or assisting junior designers.
Who Will Thrive in This Role
This role is ideal for someone who:
- Has already spent several years working in residential design within Ontario.
- Can confidently interpret and apply Ontario Building Code requirements without extensive supervision.
- Enjoys solving technical design and code-related challenges.
- Is comfortable communicating directly with clients, contractors, consultants, and municipal staff.
- Wants to be part of a growing company where their experience and judgment are valued.
This role is likely not a fit for someone who is seeking their first design position, is still developing foundational Ontario Building Code knowledge, or requires extensive training in residential permit drawing preparation.
