Job Summary
We are looking for a cook who prepares and serves nutritious meals for clients and community members in need. They are responsible for food inventory, following strict health and sanitation guidelines, and maintaining a clean, welcoming kitchen environment while working alongside staff and guiding volunteers.
Duties
- Required to hold the Society rules as stated in the St. Vincent de Paul rule book, including policies set by the Board.
- An important function of this position is making known our mission of service to the poor and charity to all.
- Confidentiality is a must, relating to all that seek our help or make donations to the society.
- In consultation, and with assistance from, the Food Hamper/Assistant Coordinator, all food will be rotated at least once a week in coolers to ensure Food Safe standards are kept.
- Food in Freezers is also rotated regularly to help prevent freezer burn.
- Record temperatures twice daily for both the walk in freezer and cooler, and initiate necessary maintenance and repairs with the Drop in Centre Coordinator.
- Keep freezers and cooler organized and in clean conditions.
- Work with a diverse population of guests and clients, and maintain confidentiality. Treats all people with dignity, kindness and respect.
- When necessary, provide crisis intervention, trouble shooting and conflict resolution (i.e. maintain a harmonious atmosphere and set an example as a positive role model.
- Planning of daily/weekly menus, utilizing donated food as soon as possible
- Prepare and cook low budget, nutritious meals.
- Ensure overall cleanliness of kitchen area, keeping the kitchen clean and assisting in dishwashing duties where necessary – emphasis on sanitizing food preparation areas.
- Supervise and delegate kitchen volunteers in food preparation and other kitchen related areas as required.
- Record statistics of meals served.
- Other related duties as required.
Experience & Qualification
- Previous cooking experience in camp and serve a variety and huge number of meals
- Knowledge of food preparation techniques, cooking methods, and kitchen safety protocols
- Familiarity with serving, meal preparation, and food handling standards in the food industry
- Experience working in a fast-paced setting with attention to cleanliness and safety standards
- Prior kitchen experience that demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently
- Valid Food Safe certificate
- Criminal Record Check is required
- Experience and/or background in cooking for many people
- Ability to make nutritious meals on an economical food budget
- Ability to empower volunteers and promote a team environment

Pay: $22.00-$24.00 per hour
