Reporting to the Superintendent, the Skilled Labourer IV is a senior, highly capable field team member responsible for leading by example in safe execution, quality workmanship, and productivity on bridge and heavy civil projects. This role performs complex hands-on construction tasks, supports short-interval planning, mentor’s junior labourers, coordinates tools and materials for the crew, and helps ensure work is completed to drawings, specifications, and project requirements. The role receives day-to-day direction from the Working Foreperson and/or Superintendent as assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
- Follow and reinforce all company safety policies, site rules, and legislative requirements.
- Participate in daily hazard assessments and ensure controls are in place before starting work.
- Lead by example with PPE compliance, safe work practices, and stop-work authority when conditions are unsafe.
- Inspect tools, rigging, and equipment prior to use and remove damaged or unsafe items from service.
- Report hazards, near misses, incidents, and quality concerns immediately and support corrective actions.
- Perform advanced bridge construction tasks including formwork installation, rebar placement support, concrete placed works support, demolition support, and restoration activities as assigned.
- Support layout and installation checks including lines, grades, elevations, and tolerances under supervision.
- Install and maintain temporary works such as shoring components, barriers, access platforms, and protection systems as directed.
- Operate and maintain advanced hand tools and small equipment safely, efficiently, and within certification limits where applicable.
- Execute work to drawings, specifications, and direction from the Working Foreperson and Superintendent.
- Support daily work planning by reviewing tasks, identifying constraints, and preparing work areas for efficient execution.
- Coordinate materials, tools, and consumables to reduce downtime and keep the crew working productively.
- Identify access or sequencing issues early and communicate them to the Working Foreperson.
- Support productivity tracking by communicating production quantities, completed work, and lost time causes as requested.
- Maintain high workmanship standards and verify readiness before work proceeds.
- Protect completed work, maintain housekeeping, and prevent damage or contamination of work areas.
- Support inspections and testing activities by ensuring work areas are accessible, clean, and ready for review.
- Identify potential deficiencies early and correct issues before they become rework.
- Provide guidance and coaching to Skilled Labourers I–III and General Labourers to improve safe work and workmanship.
- Support onboarding of new workers by reinforcing site rules, safe work expectations, and task methods.
- Assist the Working Foreperson with crew coordination and task sequencing when requested.
- Perform safe material handling including lifting, staging, loading/unloading, and stockpile organization.
- Support safe rigging practices and lifting operations under the direction of qualified personnel and supervision.
- Maintain organized tool storage, equipment staging, and laydown areas in coordination with the crew.
- Communicate progress, constraints, and hazards clearly to the Working Foreperson and Superintendent.
- Provide accurate field information to support daily records including photos, delivery ticket support, and basic production notes when requested.
- Communicate professionally with subcontractors, inspectors, and other site stakeholders as directed by supervision.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned, whether specifically or generally related to the role
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- 5+ years of bridge/heavy civil construction experience with demonstrated advanced field capability.
- Strong understanding of typical bridge construction activities including formwork, reinforcing, concrete works support, demolition support, and restoration.
- Ability to read and interpret basic drawings, sketches, and instructions and execute work to specification.
- Strong safety awareness and experience working around high-risk activities including lifts, traffic exposure, work at heights, and concrete operations.
- Proficiency with advanced hand tools and small equipment used in bridge construction; tickets/certifications considered assets where applicable.
- Strong teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and mentoring capability.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites as required.
