The Anaesthesia Assistant Supervisor oversees the day to day operation the Anesthesia Assistant (AA) team. This includes coordinating the delivery of clinical education, training and supervision of AA staff, collaborating with educational institutions to ensure educational outcomes adhere to program requirements, assigning AA students to appropriate trainers and clinical rotations, providing education support, AA services, maintaining inventories of training supplies, providing best practice guidance, and identifying/promoting the development of clinical research opportunities. The Anesthesia Assistant Supervisor also performs the technical duties involved in the maintenance and operation of anesthesia related equipment for a variety of medical and surgical procedures in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures. As a member of the Procedures Services frontline leadership team, collaborates with all inter-professional members of the Procedures Services team to facilitate the delivery of care. Duties/Accountabilities: 1. Oversees the day to day operation of the Anesthesia Assistant team in alignment with organizational and CAS (Canadian Anesthesia Society) standards by creating written protocols related to standards of practice and quality assurance with respect to equipment use to ensure adequate patient care. 2. Supports and cultivates strong inter-professional collaboration through the development of processes and mechanisms that support positive patient outcomes. Utilizes and models effective change management strategies to achieve goals. 3. Schedules Anaesthesia Assistant staff, ensuring appropriate coverage including the call schedule. 4. Conducts evaluations and long term planning; provides information for budget preparation; attends and contributes to patient assessment and selection rounds; recommends capital equipment for purchase to the Surgical Services Program Manager. 5. Participates in appropriate relief arrangements in order to accommodate approved leave requests/sick calls as determined by department needs; coordinates daily work activities for the AA's and the department. 6. Coordinates all aspects of the delivery of effective clinical instruction, education, training and supervision of Anesthesia Assistant students. Coordinates and presents lectures by identifying topics in accordance with curriculum guidelines, developing presentations, providing material and arranging for guest lectures. Ensures appropriate student supervision and that clinical standards of the training program are maintained. Instructs students in technical procedures by demonstrating Anesthesia Assistant techniques in operating rooms and /or simulation laboratory 7. Collaborates with educational institutions to ensure the quality of educational outcomes for students adhere to the requirements of the Anaesthesia Education program and with the established policies, standards and guidelines of BCWH/BCCH. 8. Mentors students to meet evaluation standards by providing evaluation updates, and maintains student records including evaluations, progress reports, assessments, clinical competency tests and attendance information. Instructs and ensures students are familiar with department policies, procedures and standards of practice 9. Develops, delivers and maintains new staff orientation program to ensure clinical competency. 10. Participates in the interdisciplinary development of patient-centered best practice protocols, procedures and guidelines (PPG) to align with the organizational strategic plan, policies, standards and practices. 11. Coordinates and provides continuing education support related to Anesthesia Assistant practices/ techniques for the staff including nursing, respiratory therapists, physicians and other allied health professionals. 12. Maintains inventories of training supplies by monitoring usage, determining cost effectiveness, orders all general supplies and related equipment for Anesthesia services via purchasing and/or suppliers. Compiles statistical information such as usage patterns and costs for budgetary requirements. 13. Supervises and conduct performance appraisals for the Anesthesia Assistant team 14. Participates in the selection of new staff Anesthesia Assistants, together with the Procedures Services Program Manager or delegate, as needed. 15. Performs patient calculations and selects, sets up, operates and maintains appropriate specialized Anesthesia equipment for a variety of medical and surgical procedures wherever Anesthesia services are required. Maintains, anesthesia related equipment in the operating room in conjunction with the manufacturer, Laboratory Services and Biomedical Engineering. 16. Provides feedback and input into equipment evaluations and documents equipment trials pertaining to Anesthesia by maintaining logs and submitting written report. 17. Participates in Anesthesia research projects by reviewing literature and modifying current equipment and procedures and/or developing and testing new equipment and procedures under the direction of the anesthesiologist. 18. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education, Training and Experience • Graduate from a recognized school of Respiratory Therapy, plus three (3) years recent related experience in the specialty practice environment, including one (1) year in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. • Completion of an accredited post-graduate diploma in Anesthesia Assistant Technology. • Eligible for membership in the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT), and the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT). • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - BCCH only Skills and Abilities • Comprehensive knowledge of Anaesthesia Assistant theory and practices including Canadian Anesthesiologists Society Clinical Practice guidelines. • Demonstrated ability to supervise, evaluate, teach and train staff and students, and to develop / implement training plans. • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. • Ability to deal with others effectively. • Ability to organize work. • Ability to operate related equipment. • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position. • Demonstrated ability to develop training and instructional materials and evaluation tools.
