Pay:
$ 33.19 per hour. (plus a percentage in lieu of Statutory and Lu’ma Paid holidays, Vacation, Benefits and Optional RRSP as per the COPE 378 Collective Agreement.)

Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and designated supervisor, the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides direct personal care and health support services to residents of the Complex Care Housing Program at the Western Supportive Housing Site. The HCA assists residents with activities of daily living, monitors and documents changes in health status, promotes resident safety and well-being, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary care team to support individualized care plans.
The Health Care Aide works within their scope of practice, organizational policies, and applicable regulatory standards while fostering a respectful, culturally safe, and person-centered environment.
Responsibilities
· Assist residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, showering, grooming, dressing, oral hygiene, skin care, toileting, and continence care.
· Provide assistance with hair care, adaptive dressing techniques, and personal equipment as required.
· Assist residents with transfers to and from beds, wheelchairs, scooters, chairs, and other mobility devices.
· Perform peri-care and catheter care in accordance with established procedures and infection prevention practices.
· Apply prescribed lotions, medicated creams, compression stockings (TED stockings), and other delegated treatments as directed.
· Safely assist residents with mobility, positioning, and transfers using transfer belts, slide boards, friction-reducing devices, mechanical lifts, and other mobility equipment.
· Operate mechanical lifting devices in accordance with organizational policies and safe work procedures.
· Support residents with prescribed active and passive range-of-motion exercises, walking programs, and mobility plans developed by healthcare professionals.
· Monitor residents during mobility activities and report changes in function, balance, or physical abilities.
· Assist residents with medication administration from pharmacy-prepared blister packs and medication pouches, in accordance with organizational policies and delegated authority.
· Observe residents during medication administration and report concerns or adverse reactions to nursing staff.
· Accurately complete medication administration records (MARs), task logs, and related documentation.
· Observe, monitor, and document residents' physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural status.
· Identify and report changes in health condition, including skin breakdown, altered mental status, mobility decline, respiratory concerns, signs of infection, or other significant observations.
· Participate in resident assessments, care planning discussions, team meetings, and care conferences.
· Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records in accordance with organizational standards and legislative requirements.
· Escalate urgent health concerns to nursing staff, physicians, emergency services, or other designated healthcare providers as required.
· Assist residents with meal preparation, meal setup, feeding support, and nutritional monitoring as required.
· Ensure residents are appropriately positioned and prepared for meals.
· Monitor and document food and fluid intake when required by care plans.
· Provide safety monitoring and supportive supervision for vulnerable residents.
· Recognize early warning signs of distress, escalation, or crisis and respond using de-escalation techniques.
· Identify safety risks and implement preventative measures to reduce risk of harm to residents, staff, and visitors.
· Engage residents in meaningful activities that promote cognitive stimulation, social connection, and overall well-being.
· Support residents in attending appointments and participating in treatment and recovery plans.
· Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within resident living spaces and common areas.
· Perform light housekeeping duties, including cleaning spills, maintaining bathroom and shower areas, disposing of waste, and tidying resident spaces.
· Wash, dry, and change bedding and clothing as required to support infection prevention and resident comfort.
· Follow infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
· Assist with delegated care activities within scope of practice, including:
· Emptying urinary drainage bags.
· Applying compression stockings.
· Supporting catheter care.
· Monitoring and cleaning medical equipment.
· Assisting with oxygen equipment checks and maintenance as directed.
· Inspect equipment to ensure safe operation and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
· Collaborate with nurses, physicians, pharmacists, allied health professionals, and community service providers to support resident care.
· Maintain awareness of available community resources and provide information to residents as appropriate.
· Support culturally safe and trauma-informed care practices.
· Respect and support residents' cultural beliefs, traditions, traditional medicines, and alternative healing practices when appropriate.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
· Health Care Assistant (HCA) Certificate from a recognized program.
· Current registration in good standing with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry.
· Current Occupational First Aid Level 1 (OFA 1) certificate, Food Safe Level 1 certificate, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or Mandt training, and Naloxone Administration certification.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience supporting individuals with complex health, mental health, substance use, or housing-related challenges.
- Experience assisting with medication administration from pharmacy-prepared blister packs.
· Experience working with Indigenous communities or within an Indigenous organization considered a strong asset.
· Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness and a demonstrated commitment to promoting empowerment and individual/group advocacy is preferred.
· Experience working in supportive housing, long-term care, community health, or complex care settings is an asset.
· An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
· Understanding of Indigenous cultures, values, and community engagement principles.
· Knowledge of personal care practices, infection prevention and control, and resident safety procedures.
· Knowledge of trauma-informed, person-centred, and culturally safe care practices.
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
· Strong observation, documentation, and reporting skills.
· Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize competing demands.
· Ability to safely perform resident transfers and operate mobility and lifting equipment.
· Demonstrated ability to manage conflict and de-escalate challenging situations.
· Ability to recognize changes in resident condition and respond appropriately.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
· Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
· Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, and Excel) and the ability to use electronic health records, databases, scheduling systems, and other workplace software.
· Ability to safely perform the physical demands of the position, including lifting and assisting residents, responding to emergencies, and carrying out resident care and housekeeping duties throughout the shift.
