Job Summary
The SMT Machine Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining Surface Mount Technology (SMT) production equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality PCB assembly. The operator will perform machine setup, feeder loading, production monitoring, basic troubleshooting, and quality verification while following company procedures and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Operate SMT production equipment including pick-and-place machines, stencil printers, conveyors, and reflow ovens.
- Load, verify, and replenish electronic components and feeders according to production documentation.
- Perform machine setup and changeovers for new production runs.
- Verify component part numbers, quantities, and feeder locations before production.
- Monitor production quality and machine performance during operation.
- Conduct first article inspections and report any quality concerns.
- Identify and troubleshoot basic machine, feeder, and component issues.
- Perform routine machine cleaning and preventive maintenance as assigned.
- Record production data, machine downtime, and quality information accurately.
- Follow work instructions, IPC standards, ESD requirements, and safety procedures.
- Assist with inventory control and material handling as required.
- Work closely with production supervisors, technicians, and quality personnel to meet production schedules.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area using 5S principles.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous SMT manufacturing experience preferred.
- Experience operating SMT equipment is an asset.
- Ability to read production documents, assembly drawings, and work instructions.
- Basic understanding of electronic components and PCB assembly processes.
- Familiarity with ESD procedures and electronic manufacturing environments.
- Ability to identify common SMT defects such as missing components, polarity errors, tombstoning, and solder defects.
- Good attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg (55 lbs) occasionally.
- Ability to stand and work in a manufacturing environment for extended periods.
- Basic computer skills for production reporting and machine operation.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Experience in ISO 9001 manufacturing environments.
