Nature & Scope:
Back on Track is a program that works in partnership with local elementary and secondary schools to offer support to students, who, for various reasons, are temporarily suspended from school. Reporting to the Supervisor, Community Impact Programs and in collaboration with Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, the candidate’s principal responsibility is ensuring the effective operation of the program and the support of students (12 – 17 years old) during their referral period.
Responsibilities:
- Intervening with elementary and secondary school students on an individual basis and in a group setting.
- Facilitating daily group workshops on social or behavioural issues (e.g. anger management, responsibility, bullying, etc.).
- Supervising and supporting students with assigned schoolwork.
- Implementing a strong “youth work” approach and behaviour management strategies/interventions as informed by program and participants’ objectives.
- Maintaining strong relationships with partnering schools and school administrators.
- Communicating regularly with participants’ parents/guardians throughout the program and follow-up processes.
- Managing case files and entering data into the program’s database.
- Drafting annual reports and providing statistics on program results at the end of the school year, and/or as required.
- Frontline support for other Youth Recreation programs and Summer Day Camps as needed.
- Completing other general administrative duties.
- Adherence to the YMCA Child and Vulnerable Adults Safeguarding Policies and Procedures and Code of Conduct.
Qualifications:
- Criminal Reference Check (CPIC) including Vulnerable Sector Check completed not more than 120 days prior to interview, with results acceptable to the YMCA of Eastern Ontario. Those under 18 years of age will be required to sign a statutory declaration confirming that there is no criminal reason why they should not work with children or youth.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR level “C”.
- Post-secondary education in youth work, social work or other related fields.
- 1 (one) year of experience working with youth, ideally with youth intervention.
- Strong communication skills, both spoken and written.
- Sound understanding of issues impacting youth and healthy youth development.
- Ability to work individually and in groups with diverse youth and their families, including youth with challenging behaviours.
- Commitment to social inclusion and able to respond sensitively and with personal awareness to the diverse needs of participants.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
