Operating various modern utility vehicles, from commercial vans to 5-ton trucks, you will enjoy a high degree of daily independence as the public face of our logistics network. Campus-Wide Pickup and Delivery: Sorts, loads, and transports a wide variety of freight, campus mail, priority courier documents, library assets, and furniture across multiple university campuses and off-campus locations.
Dangerous Goods & Compliance Management: Ensures full legal compliance with the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Act by verifying documentation, labeling, packaging, and applying vehicle placarding for hazardous research materials, biohazards, and cryogens.
Liquid Nitrogen & Specialized Routing: Handles the loading, secure transport, and precision pouring of dry ice and liquid nitrogen (LN2) dewars within complex laboratory and research environments.
Logistics Equipment Operation: Safely operates various fleet and rental vehicles (up to 5-ton trucks) alongside specialized material-handling equipment like forklifts, power tailgates, and motorized pallet jacks.
Independent Problem Solving: Autonomously prioritizes daily workloads, coordinates with dispatch via two-way radio, and independently adjusts route schedules to navigate campus construction and congested traffic conditions safely.
Minimum of a Grade 12 education.
Minimum of five (5) years of professional driving and delivery experience.
Must possess a valid Alberta Class 5 (non-GDL) driver’s license. Must be able to provide a recent copy of a three-year driver’s abstract with no more than six (6) demerits and/or two (2) moving violations within the last two years.
Must pass a defensive driving training course, and successfully pass the UofA Fleet Safety Driver's Evaluation and maintain the UofA Authorized Driver status.
Must possess and maintain a current Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certification and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification.
Minimum basic computer literacy is required, including the ability to independently navigate digital asset tracking systems, operate handheld mobile scanning devices, manage emails, and complete mandatory online compliance training and regulatory documentation.
Ability to perform continuous heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity, including driving, walking, climbing stairs, pushing heavily loaded carts, and handling weights. The weight can vary from letter size items to items pallets weighing over 1000 pounds depending on the physical ability of the individual, the job being performed and the location the delivery.
Ability to maintain intensive visual concentration while operating large fleet vehicles in tight spaces heavily congested with vehicular, cyclist, and pedestrian traffic.
Ability to safely operate a diverse fleet of University and rental vehicles (ranging from mini-vans to 5-ton trucks) as well as standard material-handling tools including power tailgates, manual/powered pallet jacks, and multiple cart types.
Sound operational understanding of provincial and national legislated guidelines, including the TDG Act and Regulations for identifying, documenting, labeling, and vehicle-placarding hazardous research assets.
