We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join our multidisciplinary team of researchers (e.g., organization theory, marketing, supply chain, finance, entrepreneurship) at the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This position is funded by the Chiu Centre for Business Serving Community, the Norman Frohlich Professorship in Business Sustainability, and an Insight Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The recipient will have the opportunity to work with scholars such as Bruno Dyck, Sean Buchanan, Chi Lao, Rajesh Manchanda, and others from the Asper School and other departments at the University of Manitoba (e.g., inaugural members of the Chiu Centre for Business Serving Community). This is a one-year appointment beginning as early as September 1, 2026, with a salary of $60,000 plus benefits.
Responsibilities
The Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate with our multidisciplinary team of scholars to produce a series of papers exploring sustainable business from multiple perspectives. In particular, the Fellow is expected to write papers based on qualitative analyses of an existing dataset of interviews with over 100 organizations, focusing on themes related to sustainable business. The interviews have all been transcribed and coded for broad themes. The dataset is unique not only for the breadth of themes it includes, but also because a majority of the businesses in the sample were chosen for deliberately placing social and ecological well-being ahead of maximizing profits (e.g., they seek to make enough money, relaxing the need to maximize profits). These businesses are consistent with a strong sustainability, radical, alternative, Social and Ecological Thought (SET), and/or business serving community approach. The Fellow is also encouraged to collect new data and pursue other related projects. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Bruno Dyck.
Qualifications
We are looking for a researcher who is genuinely committed to enhancing the positive influence of business in community-building and sustainability, and who will actively contribute to research. Strong candidates will have:
- A completed PhD within past 5 years (or pending convocation) in Business with a research agenda relevant to the Fellowship (note that a relevant PhD in anthropology, economics, environmental studies, public policy, sociology, or a related field may also be considered);
- Demonstrated capabilities for writing papers and conducting original research, including a track record or clear trajectory of scholarly papers in aligned areas such as: sustainable business and ecosystems, social impact entrepreneurship, circular value chains, systems thinking, alternative forms of business (e.g., cooperatives, hybrid organizations), and ecological, regenerative, purpose-driven, placed-based, relational, or Indigenous approaches to business;
- A passion for business research that tackles real-world social and/or ecological problems, and an aptitude and enthusiasm for multi-disciplinary collaboration with the ability to work alongside faculty and graduate students from across the University;
- Strong skills and experience in qualitative methods (e.g., coding and analyzing interview data, using software such as NVivo);
- Strong writing, organizational and interpersonal skills.
Information about application process
With an anticipated start date as early as September 1, 2026, applications will be reviewed starting August 4, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled.
If you are interested in applying, your application should include the following items:
- a cover letter outlining why you are a strong fit for the Fellowship and how it supports your career path (up to two pages);
- a research statement describing your research record and academic accomplishments (up to three pages);
- a curriculum vitae (CV);
- proof of PhD completion (if PhD is pending convocation, a letter from the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies or the Registrar's Office from the home institution is required)
- two letters of reference, and
- a sample research paper (preferably published/accepted, preferably lead author).
