Position Summary
The General Mechanic & Maintenance Technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the company's fleet of vehicles, construction equipment, trailers, and mechanical assets to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. This role also provides general maintenance support for company facilities and properties as required. The successful candidate is mechanically inclined, safety-focused, and capable of troubleshooting a wide variety of mechanical and equipment issues.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical & Equipment Maintenance
- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain personal vehicles, trailers, and construction equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, filter replacements, and scheduled servicing.
- Troubleshoot and repair gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, brakes, steering, suspension, cooling systems, electrical systems, and drivetrains.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues using appropriate diagnostic equipment and repair procedures.
- Repair or replace worn or damaged mechanical components.
- Perform welding and fabrication repairs where required.
- Maintain generators, compressors, pumps, small engines, and other powered equipment.
- Conduct safety inspections to ensure vehicles and equipment meet operational and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare equipment for seasonal use and perform off-season maintenance.
- Coordinate repairs requiring specialized service with external vendors when necessary.
- Maintain accurate service, inspection, and repair records for all fleet and equipment assets.
- Assist in managing parts inventory and ordering replacement components and shop supplies.
Facility Maintenance
- Perform general maintenance and repairs to company buildings, shops, and yard facilities.
- Repair doors, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and other building systems as required.
- Assist with shop improvements, equipment installations, and facility upgrades.
- Maintain company grounds, storage areas, and workspaces.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience as a mechanic or equipment technician.
- Experience maintaining commercial vehicles, construction equipment, trailers, and small engines.
- Strong understanding of diesel and gasoline engine systems.
- Experience with hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
- Welding and fabrication experience is considered an asset.
- Valid Class G driver's licence.
- Heavy Equipment Technician (421A), Truck and Coach Technician (310T), Automotive Service Technician (310S), or similar trade certification is considered an asset but not required.
- Waxing, polishing & buffing, consider an asset.
- Ability to operate forklifts, skid steers, loaders, and other equipment is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read service manuals, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Proficient in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop equipment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and preventative maintenance.
- Dependable, reliable, and able to respond to emergency repairs when required.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily in a maintenance shop.
- Exposure to grease, oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, noise, vibration, and varying weather conditions.
- Occasional after-hours may be required.
Pay: $26.00-$34.00 per hour
