Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and experienced International Medical Graduate (IMG) to join a busy family medicine practice. This position is designed for physicians trained outside Canada who are preparing for medical practice or residency in Canada and wish to gain meaningful exposure to the Canadian healthcare system.
Our clinic has a strong track record of supporting International Medical Graduates in their transition into the Canadian medical system. Many Clinical Assistants who have trained in our clinic have successfully progressed into residency programs across Canada. This opening is intended to fill a position recently vacated by a Clinical Assistant who has moved on to residency after gaining experience in our clinic.
The Clinical Assistant works directly under the supervision of a family physician and plays an important role in supporting high-quality patient care. This is an excellent opportunity to develop clinical skills, gain familiarity with Canadian clinical workflows, and strengthen preparation for residency applications.
This role provides a highly educational environment with opportunities for both direct and indirect teaching through close collaboration with the supervising physician, interactions with other physicians in the clinic, and regular educational exposure through clinical discussions and pharmaceutical representatives.
Responsibilities
The Clinical Assistant will work closely with the supervising physician to help deliver comprehensive primary care services. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Performing complete patient assessments and developing preliminary management plans for physician review.
- Managing a high-volume clinical environment, assessing approximately 4–5 patients per hour.
- Seeing a wide variety of family medicine cases including routine visits, chronic disease management (diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, ischemic heart disease), well-baby checks, prenatal and postnatal visits, annual physicals, and acute concerns.
- Working under Delegation of Controlled Acts as permitted under CPSO guidelines.
- Ordering and reviewing diagnostic tests such as laboratory investigations, X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs under physician supervision.
- Reviewing incoming reports, results, and consultation letters and updating patient charts appropriately.
- Educating patients on preventive health and chronic disease management.
- Communicating results to patients and arranging follow-up as directed by the physician.
- Completing various forms including insurance forms, work-related forms, Service Canada, Service Ontario, ODSP, MOH, MTO, WSIB, and other administrative medical documentation.
- Performing basic family practice procedures such as IM, subcutaneous and intradermal injections, vaccinations, Pap smears, ear syringing, liquid nitrogen cryotherapy, and suture or staple removal.
- Assisting with clinic workflow, chart documentation, referrals, and other clinical tasks to support efficient patient care.
- Participating in a fast-paced clinical environment while maintaining high standards of patient care.
- Performing additional responsibilities as assigned by the physician to support optimal patient care.
Qualifications
- International Medical Graduate (IMG) with prior Clinical Assistant experience in Canada preferred.
- Strong clinical assessment and documentation skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Strong interest in learning the Canadian healthcare system and preparing for residency.
Why This Role Is Valuable for IMGs
This position is particularly well suited for IMGs planning to apply for residency in Canada. It offers direct exposure to Canadian clinical practice, mentorship from practising physicians, opportunities for clinical teaching, and valuable experience managing patients within a supervised family medicine setting. Many of our previous Clinical Assistants have successfully transitioned from this role into Canadian residency programs.
