ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
PATIENT SAFETY

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Clinical Dietitian provides comprehensive nutrition care for hospital inpatients and outpatient clinics, including Hemodialysis and Chemotherapy. Responsibilities include nutrition assessment, therapeutic diet planning, enteral/parenteral nutrition coordination, and patient counseling for recovery and discharge. The role collaborates with interprofessional teams, ensures compliance with food service standards, and supports quality initiatives through policy development and staff education. Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and expertise in dysphagia management are essential.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK
Clinical Nutrition Services:
· Provides nutrition screening, assessment, and counseling for inpatients (Acute Care, Complex Continuing Care, Enhanced Care Unit).
· Develops, implements, and evaluates therapeutic diets as prescribed by physicians or healthcare staff.
· Coordinates and monitors enteral and parenteral nutrition support; evaluates specialized products for clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness.
· Conducts bedside swallowing assessments for suspected dysphagia and recommends appropriate food textures and fluid consistencies.
· Participates in interprofessional rounds and collaborates with nursing to align nutrition care with patient routines.
· Counsels patients and families on therapeutic diets and healthy eating for discharge planning.
· Anticipates changes in clinical nutrition standards, technology, and systems; acts as a change agent to support organizational priorities.
Outpatient Services:
· Provides nutrition assessment and counseling for Hemodialysis and Chemotherapy patients.
· Monitors Hemodialysis patients post-lab work; provides renal diet education and attends renal dietitian meetings with Ottawa Hospital.
· Manages scheduling and delivery of outpatient consultations in person, by phone, or via video.
Food Services:
· Ensures patient menus comply with nutritional care standards and therapeutic diet requirements.
· Verifies accuracy of therapeutic diets.
· Oversees inventory of specialized enteral nutrition products through Food Service Supervisor.
· Evaluates new systems and products; makes recommendations and participates in planning and implementation of changes.
· Provides training to food service staff on diet therapy as needed.
Quality Assurance & Education:
· Represents Clinical Nutrition on hospital committees (e.g., Pharmacy & Therapeutics, Medicine Care, Cancer Care, Professional Practice).
· Develops and reviews clinical nutrition policies and procedures.
· Identifies staff education needs and coordinates nutrition in-services.
· Maintains accurate workload statistics for reporting purposes.
· Collaborates with leaders and teams to implement projects and process improvements.
Other Activities:
- Participates in workplace wellness initiatives.
- Liaises with community programs to promote nutrition education.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nutrition/Dietetics with accredited internship.
· Registered Dietitian with the College of Dietitians of Ontario (or eligible).
· Commitment to continuing competency standards as legislated by CDO.
· Membership in Dietitians of Canada; PEN subscription preferred.
· Training in dysphagia assessment and management.
· Minimum 2 years of clinical experience in hospital or outpatient settings preferred.
· Excellent verbal communication and documentation skills.
· Strong interpersonal and motivational counseling abilities.
· Proficiency in EMR systems and computerized environments.
· Excellent organizational skills to manage diverse caseloads effectively.
· Knowledge of current standards and best practices in clinical nutrition, therapeutic diets, enteral/parenteral nutrition, and dysphagia management.
· Ability to work independently with sound clinical judgment.
