Nelson Lumber is looking for a motivated and customer-focused Customer Service Labourer to join our retail yard team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, providing excellent customer service, and contributing to a fast-paced team environment.
As a member of our yard operations team, you will assist customers with building material orders, safely operate equipment, maintain an organized and efficient yard, and help ensure a safe and productive workplace.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide exceptional customer service by assisting customers courteously and professionally.
- Accurately pick, process, and prepare customer orders.
- Load and unload building materials safely and efficiently.
- Operate forklifts, loaders, and hand tools after receiving appropriate training.
- Identify and handle a variety of lumber and building material products.
- Measure and sort materials according to customer specifications.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard, warehouse, and equipment.
- Perform general yard maintenance and outdoor upkeep.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures and report hazards or unsafe conditions.
- Communicate effectively with customers and team members.
- Complete other duties as assigned to support yard operations.
Qualifications
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Knowledge of lumber and building materials is preferred.
- Knowledge of general workplace safety practices.
- Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
- Self-motivated with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to teamwork.
- Physically fit and capable of lifting up to 75 lbs on a regular basis.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work a regular schedule of 5 days per week, 8-hour shifts, with overtime as required.
Preferred Qualifications
The following are considered assets:
- Forklift certification or experience operating material handling equipment.
- Experience operating loaders.
- Ability to accurately use a tape measure.
- Class 3 Driver's Licence and/or Air Brake (Q) Endorsement.
- Previous experience in a lumber yard, warehouse, construction supply, or related industry.
Training
No formal education is required. Nelson Lumber provides on-the-job training for equipment operation and company procedures.
