Job Description
The Kimmirut Housing Association is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Oil Burner Mechanic (OBM) for a 6-month term, with the possibility of extension for the right candidate.
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Oil Burner Mechanic will perform inspections, maintenance, repairs, and installations of oil-fired heating systems in Local Housing Organization (LHO) units. The successful candidate will help ensure that heating systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably while maintaining a high standard of workmanship and customer service.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible for the following:
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain oil-fired furnaces, boilers, burners, and associated heating equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing of residential heating systems.
- Install and replace oil-fired heating equipment and related components as required.
- Inspect fuel storage tanks, fuel lines, and associated equipment to ensure they are operating safely and efficiently.
- Complete work orders, inspections, and maintenance reports accurately and in a timely manner.
- Respond to emergency heating system failures during and after regular work hours, as required.
- Assist in planning and forecasting required parts and inventory for maintenance activities.
- Mentor apprentices or maintenance helpers, when assigned.
- Ensure all work complies with applicable safety regulations, manufacturer specifications, and industry standards.
- Adhere to all workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Valid Oil Burner Mechanic (OBM) Certification (Journeyman or Red Seal equivalent where applicable).
- Minimum of 5 years' experience servicing and maintaining residential oil-fired heating systems.
- Experience installing, repairing, and troubleshooting furnaces, boilers, burners, and fuel systems.
- Strong understanding of Northern building practices and applicable Canadian codes and standards.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical faults efficiently.
- Experience working in a cross-cultural environment and previous supervisory experience would be considered an asset.
- Ability to prepare inventory and material requirements for projects and annual maintenance planning.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (preferred).
- Ability to work independently and respond effectively to emergency situations.
Employment Information
This is a 6-month term position with the possibility of extension for the right candidate.
- Hourly Rate: CA$47.71 per hour
- Northern Allowance: CA$11.05 per hour
- Travel to and from the worksite is provided by the employer.
