Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Child Care Centre Prep Cook to prepare nutritious and appealing meals for children in our care. The ideal candidate will have experience in food preparation, menu planning, and food safety standards, ensuring that all meals meet dietary guidelines and promote healthy eating habits. Responsibilities
- Plan and prepare daily menus that meet nutritional requirements and accommodate dietary restrictions
- Prepare and cook meals using safe food handling and sanitation practices
- Ensure all food is prepared in accordance with health and safety regulations
- Maintain cleanliness of the kitchen, including utensils, appliances, and work surfaces
- Assist with meal service, including serving food to children in a friendly and professional manner
- Follow dietary guidelines and collaborate with staff to accommodate special dietary needs or allergies
- Document food preparation processes and maintain accurate records as required
- Ensure all childcare regulations for kitchen and food safety prep are maintained to meet strict licensing compliance, requirements and expectations
- Follow strict and appropriate substitutions for children with food restrictions, allergies and sensitivities
- Deliver and collect lunch/snack trays and bins to/from all on-site programs and wash/sanitize all onsite dishes and cookware
- Have off-site lunch/snacks ready for delivery and once bins are returned empty out food storage containers and contents from the bin. Ensure all food has been temperature checked and logged before sending out
- Complete clean up after each meal (i.e. dishes, countertops, etc.) Take out garbage, break down cardboard, sweep and mop the kitchen floor at the end of shift.
- Deep clean fridges and freezers- monthly
- Temperature check and log daily the fridge/ freezers, ensure equipment is in working order. Report to the Cook and Centre Director if an item is not in good working condition
- Meet all regulatory standards and complete appropriate paperwork needed to maintain compliance daily (I.e. logbook, temperature logs, cleaning log)
- Maintain a professional relationship with all inspectors and provide completed documentation when required
- Assist Cook to keep a current inventory of kitchen equipment and supplies
- When orders arrive, items need to be stored in a timely manner ensuring quality control of the food and returning items that don’t pass quality
- Ensure inventory sheets are collected and reviewed from off-site centres weekly
Experience
- Prior experience in dietary department or as a dietary aide is preferred
- Experience with menu planning, food preparation, and cooking in a child care or similar setting is highly desirable
- Background in fine dining, catering, or restaurant environments is beneficial but not required
- Knowledge of food safety standards, proper knife skills, and kitchen operations is essential
- Familiarity with the food industry, culinary techniques, and food handling procedures is advantageous
- Previous roles involving meal preparation, serving, or kitchen experience will support success in this position
