North Pole Hoops (NPH) is a Canadian basketball organization dedicated to growing the game and developing the next generation of basketball talent. Through leagues, tournaments, events, scouting, and media, NPH creates opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials, and the broader basketball community.
About the Role
NPH is seeking reliable and passionate basketball referees to join our team. Reporting to the Head of Referees, Referees are responsible for officiating assigned basketball games fairly, consistently, and professionally while helping create a positive and safe environment for all participants.
Referees will apply NPH league and event rules, complete required training, and work closely with NPH Operations and event staff. Referees are also expected to lead by example and represent the NPH culture throughout each event.
Responsibilities
- Officiate assigned basketball games according to NPH league and event rules.
- Maintain fairness, consistency, professionalism, and respect throughout each game.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with players, coaches, scorekeepers, game leads, and event staff.
- Arrive on-site 15–30 minutes before the first scheduled game.
- Help ensure games begin and end on schedule.
- Manage game flow and appropriately start, stop, and resume play.
- Help maintain a safe environment for players and coaches.
- Remain calm and professional when managing challenging or emotional situations.
- Work effectively with Scorekeepers, Game Leads, Site Managers, and other NPH staff.
- Report relevant incidents or concerns to the Site Manager and Head of Referees.
- Wear the required NPH referee uniform while working.
- Communicate scheduling conflicts or shift changes as soon as possible.
- Participate in training, feedback, and referee development opportunities.
Qualifications
- Previous basketball or officiating experience is an asset.
- Knowledge of basketball rules and game flow.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.
- Reliable, punctual, and accountable.
- Positive attitude and strong team-oriented approach.
- Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and develop officiating skills.
- Availability to work evenings and weekends as required.
Compensation
Compensation is based on experience and demonstrated performance, with opportunities for increased responsibility and compensation as you progress within the NPH referee program.
