The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for five (5) permanent part-time Aquatic Lifeguard/Instructor in the Parks, Recreation and Facilities division.
Job description
Lifeguards perform supervision, public education and prevention while lifeguarding the pool and deck environment. Instructors provide swimming lesson instruction that follow the Lifesaving Society programs and instruction of the delivery of aquatic fitness.
Essential responsibilities
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
- Deliver safe enjoyable aquatic fitness classes, swimming lessons and coached programs following guidelines and expectations for positive outcomes
- Deliver/perform lifeguarding to a National Lifeguard standard during swims and rentals following policies and Health and Safety standards for prevention of injury
- Perform as accident preventers, rescuers, public relations officers and administrators
- Open, close and clean aquatic facility as scheduled
- Ensure all lifesaving equipment is maintained, available and in proper working order to implement trained rescue procedures
- Perform high level of First Aid following all set emergency procedures
- Report known or potential hazards, maintenance concerns and unsafe conditions to the Coordinator, Aquatic Services
- Perform administrative duties as required
- Promote and implement policies and procedures, rules and regulations that govern a person using the aquatic facilities
- Assist with community events as required
- Assist with providing customer service as the Front Desk Attendant
Essential qualifications
- Some secondary school education
- Because of the responsibilities of this position, the candidate must be at least 15 years of age
- Knowledge of and experience with injury prevention practices, as well as health and safety practices
- Excellent customer service skills
- Interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal
- Basic computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software program)
Other qualifications
Previous Lifeguard/Aquatic experience working at a public pool or other environment an asset (i.e. beach lifeguard, private pool lifeguard, camp lifeguard, etc.)
- Previous aquatic leadership/supervision experience an asset
- Experience in dealing/working with community user demographics (preschool, youth, adult, senior) an asset
- Experience delivering children’s activities an asset
- Experience handling cash and making banking deposits an asset
Certifications, memberships, licenses
- LSS Swim Instructor certification
- Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ or Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED certification that meets WSIB regulations
- LSS National Lifeguard – Pool
- LSS Lifesaving Instructor an asset
- CALA /Water Art Certification an asset
- LSS Examiner Status an asset
Work environment/hours of work
- This position works weekday, afternoon, evening and weekend hours
Background check requirements
Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment. A background check may include the following: education/certification verification and employment reference check. Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (Vulnerable Sector Check) prior to commencement of employment.
Essential physical and/or safety requirements
- Physical NL standards to be kept up through-out employment (wearing proper footwear and PPE)
- Completion of Health & Safety course
- Protecting self from the sun (sunscreen, hat, polarized sunglasses and hydrating with water)
- Non - slip footwear (no crocs, spongy flip flops etc.) Easy to slip off or swim with
- Bending: frequent stopping, crouching (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs – toys up to 13.64 kgs or 30 lbs – stairs or dock removals up to 22.73 or 50 lbs) (cleaning up equipment, getting in and out of the pool, bending, squatting or kneeling to speak to patrons lower than lifeguard)
- Walking: frequent walking on level surface, balancing (scanning during a lifeguard rotation, teaching on the deck)
- Sitting: frequent sitting in a chair (possibly over 30 minutes at a time) (lifeguarding from lifeguard chair)
- Standing: frequent standing outside (lifeguarding, instructing)
- A specific separate PDA for both Blenheim and Wallaceburg pools is available upon request
Benefits
This temporary part-time position has an hourly wage of $21.12 to $23.18 will receive vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
