General Helper – Public Works or Black Oak Savanna Want to spend your summer working outdoors, staying active, and contributing to the maintenance and beautification of the Alderville First Nation community? Whether you’re helping with general upkeep around the community or supporting environmental conservation efforts at Black Oak Savanna, these positions offer an exciting opportunity to gain valuable experience while working in nature.
These roles are perfect for students interested in physical work, landscaping, and environmental preservation.
Responsibilities
Public Works Department
- Assist with road maintenance, pothole repairs, and grading
- Support water and sewer system maintenance
- Maintain parks, playgrounds, and community green spaces
- Assist with building and facility repairs and painting
- Assist with waste management and recycling programs
- Operate small equipment and power tools under supervision
- Respond to community maintenance requests
- Support seasonal projects (spring cleanup, fall preparations)
Alderville Black Oak Savanna (ABOS)
- Assist with grassland maintenance and native plant restoration
- Assist the staff with plant/bird/tree/seed data collection
- Collect, clean, and store traditional seeds
- Monitor site as required
- Plant new plants, maintain flower beds
- Support community garden and agricultural projects
- Document plant species and traditional uses with ABOS staff and Elders
- Support sustainable agriculture education programs
- Other related duties as required
Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years of age in the year 2026
- Enjoy working outdoors and staying physically active.
- Comfortable with basic ecological monitoring and guiding tours for visitors (Black Oak Savanna role).
- Able to follow safety procedures and wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety boots.
- Experience with hand tools, power tools, or gardening is a plus but not required; training will be provided
- Knowledge of horticulture, landscape maintenance, irrigation systems, or gardening is desirable
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Strong work ethic with attention to detail and safety procedures
- Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periodsThis seasonal role provides valuable practical experience in groundskeeping and landscape maintenance while fostering teamwork and a strong work ethic. The position is suitable for students eager to develop their skills in horticulture and outdoor maintenance activities.
Pay: $17.60-$20.64 per hour
