Role Summary
The Chair provides overall leadership to the Board and ensures Zamar Music Inc. fulfills its mission, vision, and strategic objectives. The Chair leads board operations, partners closely with the Executive Director, and sets the tone for an engaged, accountable, high-functioning board.
Core Responsibilities (Required of All Directors)

Attend and actively participate in Board meetings (minimum 75% attendance)

Review materials in advance and come prepared to contribute to discussion and decision-making

Fulfill governance responsibilities, including motions, approvals, and strategic oversight

Act as an ambassador for Zamar Music Inc. within your networks and communities

Uphold organizational values, including equity, respect, and professionalism
Contributions & Engagement (Expected of All Directors)

Make introductions that support Zamar’s development — donors, sponsors, partners (Target: 3–5 meaningful introductions annually)

Attend and support organizational events — concerts, showcases, community activations (Target: 1–2 events annually; Board presence is expected across all major events)

Amplify Zamar’s work through personal and professional networks

Contribute strategic insight aligned with your expertise
Capacity & Accountability

Participate in fundraising at the board level — supporting campaigns, cultivating relationships, and helping convert interest into support

Board giving: Directors are strongly encouraged to make a personal annual contribution at a level that is meaningful to them, with no fixed minimum or maximum; what matters is full participation

Help raise awareness of who Zamar is and what we do, bringing new stakeholders into the fold

Be present and visible at Zamar events as a representative of the Board

Participate in an annual board self-assessment and disclose any conflicts of interest
Role-Specific Responsibilities

Leadership & Governance: Lead and facilitate effective board meetings; develop agendas with the Executive Director; ensure the board operates within its governance framework, adheres to bylaws, and maintains accountability to stakeholders.

Strategic Guidance: Partner with the Executive Director to drive implementation of strategic goals; foster a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration.

Board Performance & Development: Hold directors accountable to engagement, fundraising, and attendance expectations; oversee recruitment, onboarding, and development; ensure a diverse and skilled board composition.

Advocacy & Representation: Serve as a lead ambassador for Zamar; build relationships with stakeholders, sponsors, funders, and community partners.

Executive Support: Conduct regular check-ins with the Executive Director; act as a sounding board on initiatives and challenges; support succession planning.
Leadership & Engagement Opportunities
The Chair may convene or guide working groups (finance, fundraising, governance, programming, education) and lead strategic-planning and policy-development initiatives.
Suggested Time Commitment: Approximately 12–15 hours per month — regular ED check-ins, agenda and meeting prep, board leadership, events, and external representation. Higher during AGM, strategic planning, and major campaigns.
Qualifications

Proven leadership experience, preferably in a board or governance setting

Strong understanding of nonprofit governance and strategic planning

Background in music, arts, culture, or the wellness sector is an asset

Exceptional communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
