Lead Hand – Flat Roofing Position Summary
The Lead Hand – Flat Roofing is responsible for supervising a small crew on flat roofing projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to specification. This role works hands-on while coordinating daily site activities, materials, and quality control.
Key ResponsibilitiesCrew Leadership & Supervision
- Lead and direct a crew of 2–6 roofers
- Assign daily tasks and ensure productivity targets are met
- Train and mentor apprentices and junior roofers
- Maintain positive communication with crew and management
Installation & Roofing Work
- Install and supervise systems including:
- TPO / PVC single-ply membranes
- EPDM systems
- 2-ply SBS modified bitumen
- Perform:
- Tear-offs and surface prep
- Insulation and vapor barrier installation
- Flashings, drains, curbs, and penetrations
- Ensure proper torching, welding, and adhesion techniques
Quality Control
- Ensure all work meets manufacturer specs and Ontario building codes
- Inspect completed work daily
- Identify and correct deficiencies before sign-off
Site Coordination
- Organize materials and equipment on site
- Coordinate deliveries and staging
- Work with project managers and GCs to maintain schedule
Health & Safety
- Enforce all safety policies and procedures
- Ensure proper use of:
- Fall protection systems
- PPE
- Ladder and access safety
- Conduct toolbox talks and hazard assessments
Documentation & Reporting
- Track daily progress and report to supervisor
- Record labour hours and material usage
- Report issues, delays, or change conditions
QualificationsExperience
- 3+ years flat roofing experience
- 1+ years in a leadership or lead hand role
- Strong knowledge of commercial roofing systems
Skills
- Ability to read drawings and specs
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Problem-solving on active job sites
- High attention to detail
Certifications (Preferred / Required in Ontario)
- Working at Heights (mandatory)
- WHMIS
- First Aid (asset)
- Manufacturer certifications (Firestone, Soprema, etc.) – asset
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs
- Comfortable working at heights
- Able to work in varying weather conditions
- $30 – $45/hour (depending on experience)
