Position Description:
The Professor, Plumbing Apprenticeship and Plumbing Techniques is responsible for providing academic leadership and for developing an effective, learning-centered environment for students through the design and delivery of curriculum within the School of Apprenticeship and Skilled Trades at George Brown Polytechnic. The professor will teach courses to students in the Plumbing Techniques Certificate Program and the 306A Plumber Apprenticeship Program, in addition to other diploma, certificate, and apprenticeship-level courses when required.
Education / Certification / Designation:
- A Certificate of Qualification in the Plumber (306A) trade is required.
- A Certificate of Apprenticeship in the Plumber (306A) trade is required.
Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) full-time years of relevant industry experience as a Journeyperson Plumber in the construction field is required.
- Experience in a variety of plumbing installations within Residential, Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional (ICI) sectors is required.
- Experience with plumbing systems, fixtures, drainage, venting, water distribution, hydronic systems, and related piping systems is required.
- Prior post-secondary teaching experience, training in adult instructional techniques, and curriculum design experience are preferred and will be applied in a variety of teaching and learning settings.
Knowledge / Skills Set:
- A thorough knowledge of plumbing theory, system design, installation practices, maintenance, and troubleshooting techniques, with proven ability to teach all Plumbing Apprenticeship trade school curriculum topics in both classroom and lab/shop settings.
- Academic leadership experience in a post-secondary program is considered an asset.
- Knowledge and experience with residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional plumbing systems, current materials, tools, equipment, and industry practices.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plumbing blueprints, specifications, schematics, and related technical documentation.
- In-depth knowledge and experience interpreting and applying the Ontario Building Code, the Ontario Plumbing Code, and other applicable industry standards and regulations.
- Thorough understanding of piping systems, pumps, water treatment systems, hydronic heating systems, backflow prevention, and plumbing fixtures and appliances.
- Ability to set up and operate specialized and standard testing equipment to diagnose, test, and analyze plumbing system performance.
- Experience with blueprint reading, estimating, system commissioning, preventive maintenance, and sustainable plumbing technologies is required.
- Knowledge of emerging technologies related to water conservation, energy efficiency, smart building systems, and green construction practices is considered an asset.
- Experience with advanced learning technologies, including online delivery platforms (e.g., Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, or equivalent).
- Involvement in innovation and professional development related to teaching, use of technology, and student success.
- Ability to convey both conceptual and practical aspects of plumbing systems and installations to students while respecting their diverse backgrounds, experiences, and learning needs.

Candidates seeking full-time faculty positions with the Polytechnic must demonstrate the ability to design, facilitate and assess learning in accordance with adult learning principles and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
Interview process will consist of a mock teaching experience and, in some cases, a practical skills component.
