Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced FM3 Captain (500 Ton) to oversee and operate a commercial fishing vessel. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing vessel operations, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and maintaining efficient fishing activities. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and a thorough understanding of maritime regulations and fishing procedures. The FM3 Captain will play a crucial role in the success of our fishing operations, ensuring compliance with all safety and environmental standards while maximizing productivity.
Duties
- Lead and coordinate all vessel operations during fishing trips, including navigation, fishing, and maintenance activities
- Ensure compliance with all maritime safety regulations and company policies
- Oversee crew members, assign duties, and maintain a safe working environment onboard
- Manage vessel logistics, including route planning, fuel management, and equipment checks
- Conduct regular safety drills and ensure all safety equipment is operational
- Perform or supervise rigging tasks necessary for fishing operations
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues promptly to minimize downtime
- Maintain detailed logs of vessel activities, catch data, and maintenance records
- Ensure proper handling and storage of catch in accordance with industry standards
Skills
- Proven experience as a Captain on commercial vessels, with at least 500-ton licensing or equivalent certification
- Strong knowledge of rigging techniques essential for fishing operations
- Mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot and perform basic repairs on vessel systems and equipment
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to manage a diverse crew effectively
- Good communication skills for coordination with crew members and regulatory agencies
- Ability to operate navigation systems and fishing gear efficiently
- Knowledge of maritime safety protocols and environmental regulations
Requirements:
- Valid Fishing Master Class 3 (FM3) certification
- MED (Marine Emergency Duties) certification
- Proven experience as a Captain or senior officer in commercial fishing
- Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
- Ability to work long hours in demanding marine environments
Assets:
- Experience in Atlantic fisheries (crab, shrimp, groundfish, etc.)
- First Aid / CPR certification
- Mechanical knowledge of vessel systems
