Emergency Shelter Worker (Frontline Worker)
Permanent Position-(36 hours Weekly)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervision of the shelter and delivery of services on a shift by shift basis.
- To conduct admission interviews and assessments.
- Provide crisis and support counselling services, both in-house and by telephone.
- Provide support and client case-management to all clients during the shift.
- Work with clients to complete initial needs and goals assessments and action plans, as well as assist them in reaching their goals through support, guidance, and problem-solving.
- Ensure the physical safety and security of resident and non-resident women at NTH and for the supervision of the shelter and services while on shift.
- To advocate on behalf of women with other community agencies and make appropriate referrals.
- To respond to crisis calls, providing appropriate support and referrals.
- To record statistics and information in the daily log, including maintenance of resident and non-resident files.
- To share in household duties (meal prep, cleaning, light maintenance, bringing in/putting away groceries, light to medium lifting, some health & safety items as needed) and activities with residents and other staff members in order to ensure the cooperative nature of shelter services.
- Other duties may include public education and provision of accompaniments, when requested.
- The successful candidate must be available to work shifts (days, afternoons/evenings, & nights - not optional), attend staff meetings and to actively participate in staff training.
Job Skills Required:
- Must possess a Degree or Diploma in a Social Service field with related experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of intimate partner violence, gender-based violence and its effects on women and children.
- Understanding of the philosophy of Nipissing Transition House.
- Ability to relate to women and children of diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work and respond in a mature, responsible, professional manner.
- Must possess and have the ability to apply emotional intelligence and sound judgement on a daily basis and during challenging situations.
- Excellent counselling and crisis management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to be supportive and non-judgmental.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated time management skills and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to complete daily tasks as required.
- Demonstrated ability to accept and follow direction.

- Must be highly motivated and hard-working for this fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to meal prep, clean, complete light maintenance, use stairs, light to medium lifting)
- Excellent attendance and punctuality is a must.
- Must provide a clear criminal record check.
