Sherwood Heights School is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Physical Education Teacher to join our elementary division in a full-time Long-Term Occasional (LTO) position providing maternity leave coverage.
The assignment is anticipated to run from September to December 2026. There may be an opportunity for an extension or future employment; however, this is not guaranteed.
The successful candidate will deliver a well-rounded and engaging physical education programme that promotes physical fitness, sportsmanship, physical literacy, and motor skill development for students from Kindergarten through Grade 8. The position also supports the school’s extracurricular athletics programme, including intramurals, school-wide athletic activities, and competitive sports teams.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a dynamic physical education curriculum that promotes physical literacy, skill development, and active living for elementary students.
- Plan and lead lessons that include a range of individual and team sports, cooperative games, fitness activities, and health education.
- Promote a positive classroom environment that encourages student participation, teamwork, and respect.
- Organize and supervise school-wide athletic events, intramurals, and physical activity clubs.
- Coach or support school sports teams and coordinate participation in competitions, tournaments, and events outside the school.
- Collaborate with staff to support school events and cross-curricular activities that include physical components.
- Monitor and assess student progress, providing constructive feedback and communicating regularly with parents.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all students during physical activities, following school and safety protocols.
- Maintain equipment and inventory related to physical education and athletics.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or a related field.
- Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) certification or eligibility to teach in Ontario.
- Experience teaching physical education to elementary-aged students.
- Experience coaching or managing student athletic teams is an asset.
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
- Ability to motivate and inspire students of all abilities in a positive and inclusive environment.
- A commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and lifelong physical activity.
- Willingness to contribute to extracurricular programming and student life.
