Underwriting Manager
About the Role
The Underwriting Manager provides leadership and oversight to Maple Mutual’s Underwriting Team, ensuring the effective delivery and execution of commercial, farm, automobile, and personal lines insurance coverages. Working closely with the leadership team, this role supports the development and implementation of underwriting strategy, including premium rates, underwriting guidelines, and policy improvements. The Underwriting Manager builds strong relationships with agents, brokers, and internal partners to serve policyholders and support sustainable growth, while assessing financial risk exposure and controlling liabilities assumed through policyholder transactions.
Key Responsibilities
- Set underwriting policies, procedures, guidelines, and plans; maintain underwriting manuals and approved wordings; and ensure alignment with company strategy.
- Oversee adherence to company standards and regulatory, legal, privacy, and reinsurance requirements; and manage large-risk procedures and escalation for authority-limit exceptions.
- Identify and implement improvements to underwriting processes and practices to enhance efficiency, quality, and customer outcomes.
- Partner with agents/brokers, Business Development, Claims, and Finance to manage risk exposure, minimize losses, and deliver effective coverage solutions.
- Support underwriting for complex and high-risk accounts; conduct large-loss reviews; and investigate claims risk alerts to proactively manage exposure.
- Coach and mentor underwriters; lead performance management and reviews; facilitate regular team meetings; and support recruiting and hiring in partnership with HR.
- Monitor underwriting activity and report to the CEO, including required reports and statistics for Farm Mutual Re, OMAP, and OMIA.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education (insurance, or business preferred) or equivalent training and experience.
- Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation.
- Minimum 7 years of P&C underwriting experience; commercial and/or farm underwriting is an asset.
- 3+ years of people leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of P&C insurance systems and underwriting risk assessment practices, including commercial risk evaluation, rating, procedures, and reinsurance. Experience with Cognition+ an asset.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, relationship-building, analytical decision-making, and customer service skills.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license.
