About MEL (Mountain Properties)
Mountain Enterprises Limited (MEL), manages a portfolio of approximately 15 commercial buildings across the South Okanagan (about 100 commercial units, with many long-tenured tenants). We’ve transitioned away from outsourced property management and are building a reliable, in-house operating model. https://melproperties.ca/.
The role
We’re hiring a bookkeeper to strengthen day-to-day accounting support for a multi-property portfolio. This role focuses on keeping routine accounting moving reliably, supporting month-end readiness, and helping maintain clean, reconcilable records across our systems.
What you’ll be responsible for
- AP/AR operations: Process invoices, keep AR on track, and follow up so items don’t stall.
- Rent and tenant follow-up: Support rent-related accounting and collection follow-up, including basic tenant communication.
- Reconciliations and controls: Complete bank recs and keep QBO and Buildium aligned.
- Month-end & audit readiness: Keep month-end tasks organized and documentation easy to find.
- CAM reconciliation support: Help keep CAM records complete and tied to the right tenants and periods.
- General bookkeeping: Handle day-to-day bookkeeping tasks and keep the books current.
- Assist with payroll, employee claims and benefits administration
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
Experience & qualifications
- Bookkeeping fundamentals: Strong core bookkeeping skills and a focus on clean, reconcilable records.
- QuickBooks Online (required): Confident day-to-day use of QBO.
- Multi-property experience: Bookkeeping across multiple buildings/properties, with strong organization across sites.
- Communication & follow-through: Clear communicator who closes loops and can handle basic tenant follow-up.
- Buildium (asset): Experience with Buildium or similar property-management systems is a plus.
- Preferred background: CPB Canada (asset) and/or 3+ years hands-on bookkeeping; property/construction/real estate experience is a plus.
What success looks like (first 90 days)
- Routine AP/AR is running cleanly and predictably (no surprises, fewer last-minute scrambles)
- Bank recs and system-to-system reconciliation (QBO vs Buildium) are current and supportable
- Month-end tasks are organized and audit support is straightforward (documents are findable, numbers tie out)
- Rent-related follow-up is supported with timely tenant communication for collection
You might be a fit if you
- Like keeping multiple workstreams organized (AP, AR, recs, month-end) and closing loops reliably
- Are comfortable working across systems (QBO required; Buildium is a plus)
- Communicate clearly and can interact professionally with tenants on rent-collection-related items
Work environment
- Based in our Penticton office; work from home and flexible schedule is expected once workflows are running smoothly
- A desk-based role with regular coordination with operations, tenants (as needed), and external service providers.
Reporting relationship
You will report to MEL’s Director of Finance (or designate) and work closely with the operations team and external accounting support as needed.
Hours and schedule
- Part-time position (target: 25 hours/week).
- Primarily weekday hours, with occasional flexibility around month-end close and time-sensitive items.
- We aim for a predictable schedule; this role is not intended to be an on-call position.
Compensation and benefits
- Hourly Rate: $30.00 per hour. This is a part-time role at about 25 hours/week.
- Benefits: Extended health benefits offered after three month probationary period
- Vacation / paid time off (Full Time Equivalent): three weeks
- RRSP matching: available after three month probationary period
- Cell phone: $75 / month allowance
