About the Role
As a Junior Estimator at Akman Construction, you will be a valued contributor to our Estimating team, supporting the preparation of accurate and competitive bids across civil infrastructure projects — including earthworks, roadworks, bulk excavation, grading, and sewer/watermain systems.
This is a close-knit estimating team where you will work directly alongside senior leadership on every bid. It is well-suited for someone with a foundational understanding of estimating who is looking to deepen their expertise in civil infrastructure, take on real ownership of bid work, and build a long-term career in the industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of assigned estimates and assist on larger bids by reviewing all bid documents and validating project scope.
- Accurately perform quantity take-offs for labor, equipment, and materials.
- Assist with preparing tender forms, generating RFIs, and coordinating proposal requirements.
- Analyze project documents to identify risks, assess site conditions, and recognize potential scheduling and market impacts.
- Contribute to identifying cost-saving opportunities and strategic advantages within each estimate.
- Support GPS model preparation and cut/fill analysis using Topcon Magnet software.
- Solicit competitive pricing from subtrade partners and suppliers and manage responses.
- Collaborate on bid-day activities, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
- Organize, document, and archive bid information for seamless transfer to project teams.
- Support cost analysis and budget reviews, providing insights to help refine estimates.
- Generate bid status reports and other key performance metrics to help improve estimating practices.
Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Engineering Technology, or a closely related field.
- 1–3 years of experience in construction estimating, or hands-on field experience in civil construction (earthworks, roadworks, sewer/watermain); candidates transitioning from field roles into estimating are encouraged to apply.
- Working knowledge of quantity takeoff, procurement, pricing, and bid-closing principles.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and project documents.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project); familiarity with civil modeling or surveying software (e.g. Topcon Magnet, Trimble, Civil 3D) is considered an asset.
- Strong attention to detail, with a commitment to accuracy and completeness in all estimates.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with sub-trade partners, suppliers, and internal teams.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to perform occasional site visits for physical project scoping.
- Eagerness to learn and adopt new technologies and tools.
