Opal Hospitality inc. is a growing multi-property hotel management company operating branded hotels across Canada and the United States. We're hiring a full-time Corporate Controller to take ownership of our accounting function.
The role
Reporting to the Director of Operations and Financial Performance, you'll own the end-to-end accounting function across our portfolio. Your primary mission is to deliver a reviewed, reconciled, and finalized monthly financial package to the Director by the 10th of each month.
You'll work with an outsourced bookkeeping team and internal part-time administrative support, coordinate directly with property Managers, and act as the technical contact for year-end external auditors.
What you'll do
Month-end close & reporting
- Own month-end close across all entities — Canadian and US
- Audit and finalize financials prepared by the outsourced bookkeeping team
- Own accrual discipline and the close calendar
- Sign off on financials before they leave the department
- Prepare and issue monthly financial packages to the director
- Support ad-hoc reporting requests
Balance sheet
- Ensure the bookeeping team is during monthly balance sheet balancing
- Monitor AR aging monthly for hotel and ensure alignment between bank and property
- Fixed assets, depreciation schedules, and FF&E capital reserves
- Debt schedules and lease accounting
- AR allowances and write-offs
- Advance deposits, deferred revenue, gift card and loyalty liabilities
- Intercompany methodology and monthly bookings across CA and US entities
- Prepaid Expenses
- Deferred Liabilities and Revenue
USALI & hotel-domain accuracy
- Ensure all reporting aligns with USALI
- Validate PMS-to-GL mapping at implementation and as new revenue and expense types arise
- Validate Payroll-to-GL mapping at implementation and as new line items arise
- Validate Old GL-to- USALI GL mapping at implementation
Tax & compliance
- HST/GST filings through CRA — including direct filings for individual properties as needed
- US state and local sales/lodging tax filing oversight
- Property tax accruals and payment scheduling
- Payroll tax compliance oversight (CPP, EI, EHT, WSIB; US state and federal equivalents)
- Cross-border withholding and non-resident tax considerations
- 1099 / T4A / T5 issuance oversight if needed
Treasury & cash flow
- Cash flow management across the portfolio — forecasting, monitoring, and reporting
- Monthly cash position reporting to the Director for owned properties
- Lender covenant compliance calculations and reporting
- Working capital management across entities
Audit, insurance & external reporting
- Audit the annual package created by bookkeepers and lead the external audit
- Insurance claim and business interruption accounting
Acquisitions & transitions
- Prepare 90-day post-takeover reconciliations on newly acquired hotels
- New entity setup — opening balances, chart of accounts, mapping approvals
- Financial due diligence support on prospective acquisitions
People, systems & controls
- Train, coach, and develop the internal administrative support
- Provide technical direction to the outsourced bookkeeping team
- Own accounting system administration and data integrity
- Maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls as the portfolio scales
What you bring
- Canadian CPA designation
- 5+ years of hospitality (hotels & restaurants) accounting experience
- Working knowledge of USALI is required
- Multi-entity accounting experience, ideally cross-border CA/US is an asset
- CRA filing experience (HST/GST) is preferred
- Strong grasp of GAAP / ASPE
- Advanced Excel
- Detail-oriented, organized, self-directed, and comfortable managing outsourced partners
Nice to have
- Franchise brand experience (Marriott, Hilton, IHG)
- Hospitality accounting systems (Nimble, M3, Inn-Flow, or similar)
Pay: From $80,000.00 per year
