Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician – St. John’s
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, servicing, and maintaining a wide range of heavy equipment. This role ensures maximum equipment uptime and safety by performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical and hydraulic failures, and conducting field repairs as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Utilize computerized diagnostic tools, hydraulic pressure gauges, and electrical testing equipment to identify faults and malfunctions in engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical components.
- Repair & Maintenance: Diagnose and repair heavy equipment components including diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic pumps, cylinders, and braking systems.
- Preventative Maintenance: Clean, lubricate, and perform routine services on excavators, loaders, skid steers, tractors plus various other pieces of heavy equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Field Service: Travel to job sites to conduct emergency repairs and on-site maintenance in various weather conditions.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of services performed, including time spent, parts used, and work orders completed.
- Safety Adherence: Strictly adhere to company safety policies and procedures, including lockout/tagout procedures, and ensure equipment meets all safety regulations.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Proven work experience as a journeyman heavy equipment technician or mechanic, preferably with 3–5 years in construction environment.
- Certification: Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician certification (or equivalent provincial/state certification) is required.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrain components.
- Equipment Familiarity: Experience servicing a wide range of heavy equipment such as excavators, wheel loaders, telehandlers, etc.
- Skills: Proficiency with hand and power tools, welding/fabrication experience is an asset.
- License: Valid driver’s license (Class 3 or 5) with a clean abstract.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and work in awkward positions.
- Comfortable working in a shop environment as well as outdoors in varied weather conditions (heat, cold, noise, dust).
- May require flexible hours, including weekends or on-call shifts.
