Job Description
Operate sandblasting to fabricated skids and structural steel materials.
Duties (included, but not limited to):
- Operate equipment to sandblast, clean, wash, strip, sand, remove corrosion, fill dents or otherwise prepare material to required specifications for application of paint and or other protective coatings
- Clean and maintain sandblasting, ventilation, compressed air and personal protective equipment.
- Prepare and apply stencils, computer generated decals and barcordes on the finished products
- Operate overhead cranes to set up and move items for blast and paint.
Surface Preparation Methods: Sandblasting, Abrasive and chemical techniques, Masking, Etching
Type of Materials or Product: General Structural Steel Products and sheet metal components
Skills and Abilities
Operate equipment to prepare steel for application of protective coatings.
Must be knowledgeable in the use of air compressors, blast pots, hoses, breathing air systems, blast hoods, blast standards (blast profile/type).
Must be knowledgeable in the use of airless sprayers, able to read paint data sheets and follow specifications, able to read WTF gauges during application, and be able to repair pumps and replace lines as needed.
Must able to read specifications, Reading text, Document use, Numeracy, Writing and Oral Communication, Working with others, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Job task planning and organizing, Significant use of memory, Finding information and continuous learning.
To be successful, Sandblasters need:
- to be in good physical condition
- 2+ years experience
- a mechanical aptitude
- strength, stamina and the use of proper lifting techniques required to handle heavy tools and parts weighing up to 25 kilograms;
- eye-hand coordination, spatial and form perception, good eyesight and manual dexterity
- the ability to visualize a finished product from a drawing
- a good background in practical mathematics, geometry and blueprint reading
- the ability to stand for long periods, do some moderately heavy lifting and carrying in a noisy place
- patience, dependability and accuracy
- the ability to work in a shop environment or outside as needed
- must have reliable transportation to and from work
- Overhead crane experience an asset
- OSSA Fall Protection an asset
- must be able to effectively communicate with team members and supervision
- must be able to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing
