The contract OT Process Control Tech provides site-based changes to DCS, PLC, SCADA, Safety System and HMI configurations, as well as front-line troubleshooting support for Operations and subject matter expertise consultation to engineering functions. The position operates as the primary on-site DCS execution resource within a broader team under the governance of the Senior Coordinator, OT Site DCS.
Safety & Compliance
- Actively participate in Cenovus safety programs and adhere to all policies and procedures
- Participate in risk assessments (PHA, HAZOP, etc) as needed
- Provide after-hours callout support to Operations during unplanned trips and restarts
- Report and support resolution of process-control related safety and lost production incidents
- Assist Operations with shutdown bypass requests and implement logic forces as required
- Ensure all DCS work aligns with Management of Change (MOC) requirements and corporate directives including COIMS
- Ensure execution approaches align with Cenovus TR Specifications and site-specific configuration practices
- Review and approve Safe Work Plans (SWPs) for remote DCS work in collaboration with Operations
- Contribute to maintenance of team standards including knowledge base “how-to” articles and Canadian Thermal DCS Specification updates
- Track work activities across SAP and ServiceNow applications
- Participate in peer reviews of configuration changes (MOCs, ServiceNow tickets, etc.) as required
Operations Support Interface
- Provide front line Operations troubleshooting support via DCS, Safety System, PLC, SCADA and HMI graphic troubleshooting and changes as required
- Support shutdowns, startups, outages, and turnaround activities
- Perform control loop tuning
- Support Alarm Management programs through improvement of bad actors
- Collaborate with OT Systems teams to ensure overall DCS system reliability and availability
Projects & Process Trials
- Develop and implement control/safety system logic, graphics, and testing activities as per project engineered work packages, ensuring configurations match controlled documentation (P&ID’s, SDKs, Data Sheets, Control Narratives, I/O drawings, etc.)
- Support Alarm Management programs by ensuring alarm design assessments occur during MOC site execution in collaboration with Alarm Management SMEs
- Conduct FAT, pre-commissioning and commissioning checks for executed projects as required
- Ensure project documentation is properly redlined, approved by stakeholders, and turned over to Document Management team. Ensure lessons learned are captured and shared.
- Support major project FATs, pre‑commissioning, commissioning, and turnover activities as required
- Review CSU and major project turnover packages to confirm DCS deliverables meet standards and operational readiness requirements
Qualifications
- Experience with one or more of the following platforms:
- Emerson DeltaV, DeltaV SIS (Safety Instrumented System)
- Honeywell Experion, Honeywell Safety Manager
- ABB Freelance, ABB XA
- Triconex Safety Instrumented System
- ControlLogix PLCs
- Knowledge of industrial communication networks including Profibus, Modbus, ControlNet, and radio systems
- Clear understanding of Management of Change (MOC) processes
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Experience with plant construction, commissioning, start-ups and operations
