Job Description:
Reporting to the Manager, Cybersecurity, the Information Security Analyst is a key contributor to ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of MRU's services, systems, and data. The Analyst monitors cybersecurity events and activity, investigates potential threats, supports Incident Response activities, assists with cybersecurity-related projects, maintains and improves cybersecurity technologies, helps develop the Cybersecurity GRC program, and provides cybersecurity guidance to ITS and other MRU departments. The position does not have direct supervisory responsibility but may provide mentoring, cross-training, and technical support to other team members as required.
This is a full-time limited term position ending March 31, 2027.
Day to Day IT Security
- Continuously monitor network traffic for any signs of security incidents or abnormal behavior. Keep a watchful eye on logs, alerts, and system events to detect potential threats and unauthorized access attempts.
- Investigate security breach incidents promptly to understand their scope, impact, and root cause. Real-time response involves mitigating the damage, isolating affected systems, and preventing further compromise.
- Document findings and actions in incident response reports, which serve as valuable records for future reference, compliance, and organizational learning.
- Take a hands-on role in implementing security measures, including configuring and managing firewalls, encryption programs, and other security software. Regularly updating and patching these tools is crucial to stay ahead of emerging threats.
- Conduct vulnerability testing and risk analysis. By identifying weaknesses in hardware, software, and network infrastructure, they prioritize risks and recommend security controls
Projects
- Represent IT security in any projects that have a security component.
- Act as project member for any security projects that require the security analyst skillset
- Provide assistance and consulting services regarding IT security to the ITS department and external departments.
Planning and Maintenance
- Assist in planning and organizing IT security equipment software upgrades and configuration changes. Regularly review and enhance existing security measures, and ensure that firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and antivirus software remain up-to-date. Staying current with security patches and updates, fortifies the organization’s defenses against evolving threats.
- Collaborate with other teams to develop comprehensive disaster recovery strategies. These plans outline steps to be taken during security incidents, data breaches, or system failures. Having well-defined procedures ensures a swift and effective response.
- Oversee the deployment and operation of antivirus solutions across the organization. Configure, monitor, and fine-tune antivirus software to detect and neutralize malware threats. Regular scans and updates are essential for maintaining a secure environment.
- Bachelor degree in fields such as cybersecurity, computer science, or information technology or equivalent
- 3 - 5 years of relevant experience in related fields.
- Certifications including CompTIA Security+, CISSP, and CEH would be considered an asset.
