Position Summary
In this role, the technician is primarily responsible for preparing and customizing hollow metal doors and frames. Significant portions of the daily work revolve around layout, fabrication, welding, and grinding.
- Interpretation: Reading and interpreting shop orders, architectural shop drawings, and hardware templates to prepare components to exact specifications.
- Fabrication & Assembly: Measuring, laying out, cutting, and notching materials. Modifying doors/frames and installing reinforcements or custom sizing.
- Welding: Setting up and operating MIG welding equipment to assemble and modify metal components.
- Finishing: Grinding and polishing welds, applying body putty/filler, sanding, and feathering affected areas flush to flat surfaces.
- Door Prep: Cutting openings for door "lites" (windows), installing glass/glazing kits, and prepping for hardware (locks, hinges, strikes, closers).
- Materials Used: Working closely with 16–20 gauge galvanneal Hollow metal Door and frame Parts, grinding discs, body filler, and touch-up spray paint.
This role combines hands-on welding expertise with crew supervision, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with specifications, codes, and schedules.
Welding & Fabrication
- Perform structural and architectural welding (MIG, TIG, Stick) as required
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and specifications
- Fabricate and modify metal components for Division 8 systems (frames, supports, hardware mounts)
- Ensure all welds meet applicable codes and quality standards
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain a safe work environment in compliance with OH&S regulations
- Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and PPE
Qualifications
- Minimum 2+ years of welding experience
- Strong knowledge of Division 8 systems (doors, frames, hardware, architectural metals)
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
- Proven leadership and team management skills
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
