Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) to join our addiction and mental health clinic team. The ideal candidate will provide high-quality, non-judgmental patient care to individuals navigating substance use and mental health challenges. This role requires a strong foundation in nursing practices, a harm reduction approach, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build trust with a diverse and often vulnerable patient population.
Schedule
- Monday to Friday
- Availability required for short shifts on statutory holidays (rotated among staff)
- Weekend shifts may be introduced in the future
- Wages to be negotiated based on experience
Duties
- Deliver comprehensive patient care in accordance with physician orders and established protocols, specific to addiction and mental health treatment.
- Administer medications and treatments accurately, including injections and opioid agonist therapy (e.g., methadone/Suboxone).
- Perform and collect urine samples for drug screening/monitoring purposes (training provided).
- Monitor patient vital signs, assess health status, and document findings using electronic health records such as Patient Vu.
- Apply harm reduction principles in all aspects of care, meeting patients where they are without judgment.
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team (physicians, counselors, social workers, case managers) to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Provide compassionate, trauma-informed care for patients experiencing addiction, mental health crises, withdrawal, or dual diagnoses.
- Educate patients and families on health conditions, medication regimens, harm reduction practices, and aftercare planning.
- Ensure compliance with infection control standards and safety regulations within the clinic environment.
- Participate in case management activities to coordinate ongoing patient services, referrals, and community resources.
- Respond calmly and professionally to changing clinical situations, including crisis or emergency presentations.
Skills & Qualifications
- Current RPN registration in good standing.
- Professional liability insurance is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and medication administration protocols, including experience with opioid agonist therapy considered an asset.
- Non-judgmental, compassionate approach with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse and marginalized populations.
- Experience with mental health, addiction, or crisis intervention is a strong asset.
- Comfortable performing urine sample collection and phlebotomy; training provided for candidates without prior experience.
- Excellent communication skills for collaborating with the care team and educating patients/families.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing clinical situations while maintaining professionalism, empathy, and appropriate boundaries.
- Flexibility to work occasional short holiday shifts on a rotating basis, with potential weekend availability in the future.
