Family Support Assistant
(Part-time, 10.00 hours/week)

We were founded in 1982 as GRIT (Getting Ready for Inclusion Today) and we have been a leader in inclusive early learning for more than 40 years. Our name has changed, but our mission has not. About the Position: The Family Support Assistant works collaboratively with families, team members, community partners and consultants to support children with complex medical needs and neurodevelopmental disabilities to participate meaningfully in daily routines and activities that are important to the family. This role supports families to embed agreed upon strategies into everyday environments and routines in ways that respect each child’s strengths, communication styles, sensory needs, and individuality.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Family Support Assistant supports program delivery by implementing Individualized Support Plans (ISPs) developed by the multidisciplinary team. This role provides direct support to children using evidence-based strategies such as visual supports, social narratives, and positive behavior supports to promote development in communication, motor skills, self-regulation, and social interaction. Through coaching, the Family Support Assistant supports parents to apply effective strategies within daily routines to achieve program goals.
The role also requires accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of visits, child progress, and activities, with reports submitted as required. Active participation in team meetings, goal planning, and ongoing professional development in child development, developmental disabilities, family-centered care, and inclusive practices is expected to support high-quality service delivery.
Compensation and Hours:
The hourly wage ranges from $28.21 to $34.07, based on experience and education. ** This position is 10 hours per week, with flexible availability Monday to Friday between 3:00 pm-6:30 p.m., adjusted as needed to meet program and family needs. Paid time off for vacation and access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). This position does work 12 months of the year including July and August.
Job Requirements:
- Diploma or equivalent experience in a related field such as Disability Studies, Community Support Work, Human Services, Therapist Assistant programs, or related lived and professional experience.
- Experience supporting children and families in home, community, or educational settings; experience with neurodevelopmental disabilities and/or complex medical needs is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish trust and rapport with children, parents, and caregivers.
- Confidence supporting families to implement strategies within daily routines, while remaining responsive to direction and guidance from the transdisciplinary team.
- Comfort working in family homes and community environments, adapting to diverse family priorities, routines, and cultural contexts.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently within clearly defined program guidelines and scope of practice.
- Knowledge of routine-based, family-centred, and collaborative approaches to supporting children and families.
- Experience with strategies such as visual supports, social narratives, AAC supports, and positive behavior supports as tools for participation.
- Understanding of neurodiversity-affirming and inclusive practices.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to meet physical demands of the role, including lifting and transfers as required.
- Current Certification in Level C First Aid/ CPR
- Own reliable vehicle with required business insurance coverage.
- Police information check with Vulnerable Sector, and Children’s Invention Record Check
