We are currently seeking an experienced Financial Controller to join our leadership team. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced automotive environment and wants to play a key role in the financial success of a well-established dealership.
Position Summary
Reporting directly to senior management, the Financial Controller will oversee the dealership's accounting operations, financial reporting, payroll administration, internal controls, and compliance requirements while supporting operational decision-making across all departments.
Start Date: As soon as possible
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week)
Primary Responsibilities
- Complete full-cycle accounting for the dealership.
- Prepare and submit accurate monthly financial statements to Mazda Canada within established deadlines.
- Ensure financial reporting complies with Mazda Canada's reporting framework and requirements.
- Liaise directly with Mazda Canada regarding financial reporting, accounting inquiries, and related initiatives.
- Coordinate year-end working papers and support external accountants throughout the annual review or audit process.
- Prepare monthly commission calculations and reporting.
- Administer payroll using Payworks, including payroll processing, deductions, ROEs, T4 preparation, and related reporting.
- Complete government remittances, including HST, payroll source deductions, EHT, WSIB, and other statutory filings.
- Prepare monthly reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts.
- Monitor cash flow and banking activities.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger integrity.
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Produce management reports and operational performance metrics.
- Maintain dealership internal controls and accounting policies.
- Assist management with financial planning and business analysis.
- Support contract administration and ensure accurate documentation and record retention.
- Assist with manufacturer audits and dealership compliance requirements.
- Work collaboratively with all dealership departments to improve financial accuracy and operational efficiency.
- Maintain confidentiality of all financial and employee information.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess:
- Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accountant, preferably within an automotive dealership.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Experience with CDK Drive is considered a significant asset.
- Strong report writing and financial analysis skills.
- Experience with Payworks payroll or similar payroll software.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A solid understanding of information technology and how dealership systems integrate across accounting, sales, service, parts, payroll, and administration.
- Experience with contract management and administrative controls.
- The ability to prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preference will be given to candidates with CDK Drive experience; however, training can be provided for the successful applicant with the right accounting background and leadership qualities.
